Bowling balls, you either hate, or hate seen being used by someone
« on: September 28, 2003, 01:14:37 PM »
Well i know we have all seen bowling balls that are in or have been in Proshops, and we always wonder what Idiot would buy them, or use them well here you go and Let them Rip.

Well i think the one guy that first comes to my mind was a guy who i bowled with for the past two yrs on a league, he had two of the Quantum Helix balls the Black/Gold and Blue/Red.  And he loved them, and for his style they worked great but i never seen anyone else use them.  I just hope he didnt buy them brandnew when they first came out lol.

Now i myself, i havent used too many Bowling balls i didnt like, since i use all STORM hehehe but i did have a Lightning drilled up for a house that had super dry backends. well when i went to use the ball, i was playing up 10 on one lane, and over 25 on the other lol.  The ball was so oil sensative the way it was drilled that it was junk.

STOP - STOP - You guys are hurting me!

Bone XS - Keep it polished, it ain't that bad. Hi maintenance though unless you like butt ugly. However, even dirty and ugly it's still not as ugly as a particle Vicious. Now there's a ball that should be banned on color alone - even if it does hit good.

WOW - This is a premium, excellent, hard hitting SPORT ball. It needs to be lightly polished, and thrown with a weak pin, either over the bridge or under the bridge. For a medium to medium heavy condition with no help from the pattern, this ball will keep you in play and hits really hard. You aren't going to see it work effectively with an aggressive drill pattern on any kind of shot, and there are far better balls for wall shot house conditons. But you can't blame any ball when it's being used on the right conditions.

Helix - Haven't thrown it yet, but there's one on the way. Don't laugh - I had to try it!

Balls that aren't working for me - Either Wicked - I liked them initially, but I'm not using them anymore. I'm having much better results with my Inferno 'arsenal' on most conditions.

Beasts - Although I liked the solid Beast, I haven't had much luck with the Pearl Beast with any drilling pattern. I know lots of people who swear by this ball, so it must be me.

Anyone who disses the Berry Razor is gonna get a 5-knuckle message from me

See, this is why I distrust Columbia so much. They label the coverstock "Ultra Friction in Oil", market the ball as a oil ball... then it turns out that it really only works with weaker drillings and on medium conditions. The only time I ever shot over 250 with that ball was when I had it polished on a walled house shot... when I tried to throw it with the factory finish on an oily/sport condition, it skidded forever. My Eraser Boost moves more with the same finish on oil.

Over the last year, these are the balls I have thrown that didn't match up to anything for me

Icon 2 (3 diff drillings)
Apex Aggression (never had that strong roll it was supposed to)
Colossus Pearl (most over-under ball ever!)
Freak Out (couldn't get a consistan read out of it)
TPC Warrior (great out of the box and then dead...3 resurfacings and a rejuv couldnt bring it back)
Labryinth (Mo's balls just seem to be too drill specific)

But i am sure in different hands these are great balls, but I will stick with storm for awhile myself after several disappointments from other companies

Its was ultra popular, successful and I know people who'd kill to have one NIB, but I always hated the Gold Rhino Pro.  It always reminded me of flu & cold season.

I'll have to second the Aggression, and probably third it too.  And the Piranha Retro, my boss had one and it SUCKED.  Also the Fuze Eliminator, I haven't thrown one yet, but everybody from people around here to Chris Barnes look like they do nothing but hit flat with it.  The only ball I've ever thrown that I absolutely HATED was the Savage Flip.

HAH!  I don't know ANYBODY now!

Being in adult leagues teaches you many things.

1.  You're not on top anymore, but there are a lot more people that suck worse than you do now.

2.  The myth about the youths having an easier shot is NOT TRUE.  I'd have an entire ring collection if it was.

3.  Drunk adults are a lot funnier than drunk youths.

I have HATED three balls: the Nasty Nail, the Pulse and now, the Throttle-R.  Different reasons for each -- the Nasty Nail was inconsistent, the Pulse hit like a piece of wet tissue and the Throttle-R is possibly the worst match of cover and core I have seen -- very good core, truly lousy cover.

I know a guy that'd be interested if it was a 16 lb original Pulse . .  Dug his Primal Rage out of the closet the other day, and he couldn't be happier, reacts better for him now than it did when he bought it.  Columbia stuff isn't a total waste of money, just most of it.  I had the Messenger B/S/P, and it was pretty awesome.  First and only 290 with it!  Oh yeah!

Some thoughts.

First time, I saw a Bone XS was with Robert Smith at ABC Natl's first time it was in Reno...must have been about 93 or so.  He scored well with it.  First time I also saw anyone use a Purple Buzzsaw.  Barry Asher on the same team used one.  I bought one after watching Barry use the ball and loved it.

If anyone remembers Barry Asher...he never could get it in gear.

I've owned I think 3 balls that I absolutely hated.

1. The Too Hot. That thing was sooooo inconsistent, 1 shot i'd leave a 2 pin, next i'd leave a 3 pin.

2. Scout Reactive. If it hit any more like a sponge you'd be able to wash dishes with it

3. Vicious Attack. No hook, hit like sponge, didn't matter the surface or drilling or the lane condition. Just didn't match up.

The only ball I had that I truly didn't like, had to be the Ultra Hot. It was a total piece of junk for me. Maybe It didn't like me...LOL

The Inferno would still kill if it was glow-pink with orange and green polka-dots. Best core and coverstock match to come down the pipe in a long long time.

I agree with you on the Black 2001 Hammer. Mine didn'take 30 games though - maybe 10 what a POS. I gave mine away too.

AMF Sumo, for me had to have perfect conditions for the Sumo to work
for me.
Also Columbia complete chaos, left more ringing 10s with that ball than ant other
I've owned.
