Title: If you have NOT rolled a 300...
Post by: Snakster on November 20, 2013, 02:38:42 PM
What is your personal best? Another thread inspired me to start this one. If you have a 300 (or 27 300s) please refrain from replying. This is for those of us still trying to climb the mountain.

I'm at 280. Pretty sure it was the 8 pin in the second. Didn't really pay attention at the time because I wasn't expecting to run off 10 in a row after. The kicker is that it was during rock and glow so the lights were out. Guess I would be better with my eyes closed.

Next two are 279 and 278. Then it falls fairly sharply. Next.

269, ringing 10 in the first and another ringing 10 in 6th.  I've had a bunch of other 260+ games, I just cannot get over the hump.

I have rolled them and I am going to post.  Message:  Stay with it.  you will get over the hump when you least expect it or have given up on ever getting one.

sorry about this, but I'm going to break the rule.

I've shot 5 300s. But keep in mind that those 5 were with a 11 year gap between the 1st and 2nd, and it took me 23 years to get to that 1st.

Before that first, my highest was 288. On my way to a 290 before I let off just a bit on the ball speed and left a 4-6. After that, my closest was in the 230s.

That 300 came at not only the lowest point of my bowling career, but the lowest point of my personal life, so it really helped me out not just in the sport, but personally as well, because my confidence then was completely shattered. Like your 280, I was worried about getting close, because there was a tornado warning issued for the town the bowling alley was in, and I didn't want power going out on me, as that would invalidate the best bowling I had ever done. Funnily enough, I was concentrating more on looking for the tornado than I was seeing that I had the front 10! Luckily, it didn't, I punched out, filled out the paperwork, and made it home before anything happened.

It would take 10 years, and moving 1500 miles (to Vegas) and then another 700 on top of that (to Sacramento) before I saw anything like that again. And to be honest, I felt like that football or basketball team that won the championship once, though that one time was 80 years ago, and wondering if it were just a fluke or if I could ever do it again.

The best advice I could ever give is to look at clips of Jack Jurek on Youtube, and especially his winning the Shark Championship. You'll learn not only one of the best lessons in bowling, but in your life: don't give up. If his going nearly 15 years between titles didn't stop him, not reaching that peak yet shouldn't stop you.

Another guy to look at: Chris Loschetter. It took him just as long as it did Jurek to win his 2nd title to win his 1st. In short, the name of the game is perseverence.

a guy I work with in my leadership business told me this, and it hits home:

Failure is not the opposite of success; QUITTING is the opposite of success.

Your day is coming.

Lol one whole reply before people started breaking the rules . . but I can actually comment on this one without breaking the rules . . lefthanded!  My high is a 279 lefthanded.  Front 7, 7 pin spare, sheet.  I was more proud of sparing the 7 pin in that game than the 11 strikes . .

290 and several 279's.  Had the front 10 last week, then my cell rang right as I was in the down swing, hello baby split!! This is my 5th year bowling.

staying with it is the point. i had 5-299 before I finally broke through.
work on fundamentals in your game and throw at every spare during practice sessions.
remembering to have the same pace on your spare shot as your 1st ball attempt.
always try to have same swing, same pace, it will allow you to keep your timing sharp on every shot.

290 in open bowling...279 with only a 10 pin in the 5th in leagues

299. NEVER THOUGHT THAT I WOULD EVER COME THAT CLOSE. WAS ONLY CARRYING A 168 AVG AT THE TIME.

298. Yeah, I choked big-time on the last shot. Oh, well. Is what it is.

while averaging about 183-186, bowled with a guy, who now is my coach, even though I moved away and most coaching is over the phone on ideas and philosophies of the sport, and he's good at hearing an issue and firing off fixes.

Bowled a 284, front 10, absolutely botched the 11th.  First ever 700 @ 724.
later in the season, same league
Bowled a 287, front 10, got nervous.  2nd 700 2 748 Century Game

League rules were screwed up too, I had the top handicap game of the year, but since my scratch series or game earned 3rd, they paid me that one.  total bs.

My only sanctioned honor score is a 297, and I have averaged between 210 and 235 in 12 leagues during the past six years.

I have had:
11 games in the 280's
25 games in the 270's
53 games in the 260's
and over 100 in the 250's

I'd say I'm due.

Good posts so far, even the rule breakers. I didn't start this because I'm frustrated or anything, just thought it would be fun. Even though I'm 47, I consider myself a beginner. Never had a ball of my own until this year. First league was an adult junior this summer. First sanctioned league is the one I'm currently in. Previously the closest thing was an intramural league in high school. And that was with a house ball.

So before this calendar year I never rolled a 200 game before. Now I've lost count.  I'm not frustrated, I'm freakin thrilled. I'd have never dreamed I could sniff a score like 280, now I'm pretty certain that I could conceivably get a 300.  May not happen, but at least I believe it's possible. It's even more fun watching my son get into it. He's had a handful of 200s already and he just started in January too and turned 12 this summer.

Since he will not be posting, I'll do it for him, his current high is 221.

279; I left a 2 pin on a thin hit in the 4th frame. My legs felt a bit wobbly in the 10th frame even though I had no chance at 300.

We have discussed on several threads how the number of 300s has devalued the achievement. I still think that a 300 is a great accomplishment (perhaps because I do not have a 300 and probably will not shoot one).

First time I came close front 9 and flush 7-10
Then 3 279's- twice 4 pin in the 4th
299 ( 4 pin of course )
And maybe 2 279 since plus a couple other 270's

My highest is a 299, left a ringing 7 pin on the last ball. Shot a 761 series during the set (my highest series). Of course it was while establishing average at the beginning of a league and my 299 was the first game.

Mine was a couple of years ago. Strikes untill my last ball. When I release the ball and look at my mark, I said oh no. Walk away with 297. That kind of mess with my mind for 2 weeks before I got over it. Still chasing the dream for first 300 LOL

297 as well. Tournament, no less. Left-handed. Just missed it at the bottom and came in light. I was telling myself not to tug it - should have stayed aggressive.

290.  Picked up the baby split in the first frame, then ran 16 strikes.

For me, the highest I have bowled has been a 280, with a couple 279's.  Since I bowl for the pure enjoyment, fellowship, and relaxation that it gives me, if I get one great.  If I never do, definitely won't lose any sleep on it.

My main goal in bowling is to be consistent, be able to read the lanes, and make the necessary adjustments properly.  If I can get to be great at that, I am more than satisfied.

290 is my high game, ringing 10 in the first. Have had the front 10 twice, left the 10 pin both times for 289s. Have had streaks of 14 and 13 in a row but can't put 12 together in the same game. BTW, been bowling since the late 70s so I put in many games. 300 gonna come? No idea but I just keep rolling because I enjoy it. High series of 796 so I am looking for that 800 also!

You know..

A Lot of this reminds me of not only my first 300, but a practice session I had in college.

Back then, I had no intention of ever reaching that score, but instead had been soundly beaten by a few people who would not only become friends of mine, but idols, in a sense.

I remember being soundly beaten by one guy my first year in Collegiates at the MidStates InterCollegiate tournament in St. Louis. Went by the name of Chris Barnes. The following year, I was beaten by two ladies: one named Brenda Norman, the other Liz Johnson. In each of these matches, they all had shot 300 on me, where my best was no more than 220, with most of my strikes coming from either light hits, tripped 4s, or tripped 4-9s.

Because of that, the thing that killed me wasn't hitting my mark, but hitting my mark consistently. So one night during our teams practice, I set myself up on a lane and tried to hit the same boards, at the same places, each and every shot. I was probably off no more than 4 times when I did this.

So 45 minutes later, I didn't realize that two of our coaches were behind me, and after I was done they asked what I was doing. I told them. Then they asked me if I had realized that I had thrown 32 in a row, which I had no idea I had done.

My point: when you think about it, it won't happen, because you're either thinking about the shot too much, or you are letting the pressure and nerves get to you so much that both lead to the same conclusion: you don't execute properly and miss the shot.

When I had no pressure on me, and was just trying to get my consistency in check, I didn't realize that 4 more strikes could have had me at 900 if it were sanctioned. When I shot my first 300, I had that distraction (that tornado warning). my block for that day (4 game doubles) was 238-300-236-202. the 238 was with the back 6, then the next 12, then the front 6, all because I was more concerned about a tornado than my game.

So I guess like I said before: persevere, but take your time, work on the consistency, and don't think so hard about it, because your day is coming.

298, threw 11 in a row.  Then, i got nervous and choked. Held up in it. went high and left the 6-10. I was so frustrated with myself at first, but I did realize that 298 is still a great accomplishment. I think you shouldnt go into a game or match looking to throw a 300. You should just start and hit your mark.  Make good shots and eventually it'll come.  I am not saying that it is easy but it is easier than it might seem. It is being consistent. And sometimes you might catch an unlucky break (ex. 8 pin, ringing ten). Shake it off and keep making good shots. I would rather throw a good three game series than worry about that one pin that cost me a 300.

High is 257, but I have rolled 12 in a row.  Switched balls and took 3 frames to find the line to the pocket.  Then the back 9 and the front 3 of the next game.  So I know I can do it.  Some day.  Maybe next week...

My high game was a 288 with ten in a row. I was using Columbia 300 Yellow dot on wooden lanes that was back in early 90's during a tournament.

Even though I was the best league and local tournament bowler in my association for many years, I never rolled higher than 279 (a score that I achieved six times).

On two occasions, I did have 17 strikes in a row over two games, but never in my life -- even in practice -- did I ever start a game with more than nine in a row.

Then again, my best bowling came in a much-lower-scoring era -- especially in my area -- as exemplified by the fact that the first seven years I bowled in the local association, NO ONE ROLLED A PERFECT GAME, and it wasn't until I bowled in the association for 14 years that ANYONE rolled an 800 series.

My highest game is 299 that was shot in the final game of the season last year. Let me fill you in to how I got there though.

Getting to that 299 took me 25 years in the making. 15 years ago in my 1st year of adult league I shot my highest game ever midway through the season of 279. 4 pin in the 4th frame. Fast forward 3 years until my next highest game, another 279. I've shot over 150+ 279 games in my bowling career. While subbing for a team on Tuesday nights 10 years ago I had the front 10. Went for the 11th shot and in my last step in my approach I took a 3 board step left, ball pushed longer and hooked a touch later leaving me the left side bucket. Ended up with a 286. That was my highest game up until last season. Meanwhile the majority of my 279's and other 270's were shot. Last year I had a streak of 9-10 in a row games shot with complete mental break downs resulting in a score in the 270s or less. The 1 game that completely tore me apart mentally was when I had 10 in a row, went for the 11th and threw it incredibly bad. Ball went into the channel, went for the spare and pocket 7-10! 4 months went by I was so messed up by that 1 game that I had no confidence, my average was dropping 2-4 pins a week. Went from a 210 average down to 178 in 4 months!

Revamped my entire game, updated my arsenal, and made a comeback. In the last 3 months of last season I was shooting 700+ every week with my highest game of 298 4 weeks before the season end. Threw the ball well in the 12th shot but just a bad break, 4-9 split. Final night of the season I shot 245, 255 for the 1st 2 games for 500. Final game I shot 299! Final shot felt great, looked great, pocket 8 pin paired up with my highest series ever at 799!

Moral of my story, NEVER GIVE UP!!!!!

So far this year my high game is 278x2. Not throwing the ball all that great this year due to my hands swelling up thanks to my line of work which will end in 2 weeks.

Prior to my foot injury in 2003 and loosing sight in my left eye my high game was 299 (5 times). I also have a 298 (4-9). Too many 289's and 279's to count and a few 290's.
High since the injuries is 278

290 once…280 once, multiple 279's

I've thrown 16 strikes in a row a couple times…just can't seem to put them all in one game.

290 was a spare in the 1st (1-2-4 spare), made an adjustment and tossed the next 14 in a row.

A few 299's, and a buncha 290's. It's almost always a 10 or 9.

289 back in the day with a Black Hammer by Faball. Blew the 6 over the top of the 10. Was one of my top three shots that night. Freaking solid. Never came close again. My son just shot his first 300 a couple weeks ago. I can't remember who I bought the IQ Tour solid from, but he says thank you. He loves that ball. Probably too much. Takes too long to switch.

I don't think I'll ever get there now, too old and a bad slide knee. I just don't bowl much anymore. Maybe I'll start again once my son's out on his own.
