What happens when you realize you're an oddball?
« on: May 11, 2008, 03:30:51 PM »
What brought this up was the "25 questions" and the responses to the overrated/underrated question, the "which ball worked best for you question," etc.

Two of the best balls I''ve ever owned were the AMF bone XS and the Lane #1 Tsunami H20. I just found out from reading that other post that apparently, I''m one of the few that either ball worked for.

I started to paw through some of the other responses and realize I did some of my best bowling with balls other people considered to be turds.

The only balls I did poorly with that other folks also did poorly with were the Hammer Vicious (the purple one) and the Storm Trauma Response (although mine was a blem).

Other than that, if the ball sucks for you, chances are it''s going to work for me. Now I don''t know whether I''m sane or not. (g)

It is quite surprising to read some matches and turds - but I would not reduce it to the ball only. There are so many factors involved - both concerning the ball itself as well as the style and the conditiosn at hand - that it is IMHO very hard to make deductions for the own game from them. For me, I never expected the ratty Renegade Revolution (a ball from 2000 and basically rather laughed at) to be such a great performer for me and my game? Sometimes it is really strange... but that's the fun of bowling, too You never know what you get with your next ball, and sometimes it just needs some tinkering with the surface to make a turd a winner.

Dizzy makes a really good point. but one thing that was forgotten is the drilling of the ball. If it the drilling is incorrect, then nothing you do the the surface will make it work for the bowler. There are times where a drilling just does not match up well with the bowler.

Sometimes you just need to plug and redrill a ball.

A lot of times it's just match up. The Assassin that was the pits for mr i redrilled for a teammate with higher speed and he shot 2 300's with it. I drilled several for others and they worked fine for them. It just did'nt match up for me. By the same token the Cobra which I shot 3 award scores with I hated aand was going to sell till i polished it then became my favorite.

I would say there are only a handful of balls that are absolutely loved by the masses....

Original Inferno, danger zone come to mind.

For the most part, you'll find people that hate a ball and people that love it.

Remember too that the opinions you see are only those of people who chose to respond to the topic.  There are many knowledgeable members of the site who don't respond to the "what's your favorite _______" post of the hour/day.  The number of responses are not even large enough to form a good representative sample of members of this site let alone bowlers in general.
