what is "frozen shoulder" and how can I avoid it?
« on: September 28, 2005, 06:47:30 AM »
A couple of months ago I was experimenting with my game. I changed something that had me forcing the ball really hard, and I slightly pulled a bicep muscle. Since then, the whole joint has gotten stiff, and is quite painful on and off.
I've got limited mobility in several directions.
Normally, it doesn't bother my bowling much, but last night it was awful, and I'm sure it contributed to my less than 20% carry, although I was 90% in the pocket...
I've been getting acupuncture for it, and also got a local massage last week. Both these seem to help, but it's not going away.

Before you say to quit bowling or take some time off - I think it's aggravated just as much by computer use as by bowling... and I can't take time off the computer.

anyway - all suggestions and information is welcome. I forgot to mention that I've got an Rx for physical therapy, but I haven't had time to start it yet.

thanks in advance!

drugs....lots of drugs...;-)..lol

Think Physical Therapy will be the answer......and lots of warm up stretching possibly before bowling?

All this can be yours............

Seriously, Im not a Doc, but my wife over the past few months has gone through what sounds like the same exact thing.  She went to the Doc, and was diagnosed with Adhesive Capsulitis.  Which is scar tissue built up in the shoulder.  According to the Doc, its pretty common, and many people think it might be a tore rotator cuff when they first get it.  The Doc sent my wife to P.T 3 times a week for mobility, and they also gave her a bunch of stretches to do.  Basically what has to happen is that the scar tissue needs to be broken loose.  Though it is quite painful P.T. should help ALOT.  The P.T. will start with heat, then stretch, a few exercises, and then end with a massage and cold pack.  If you want more info, shoot me a message, and I can pretty much tell you anything about it, and what I don't know my wife can better guide you.  Oh yeah, and according to the Doc, there is no set reason for the build up of scar tissue, it just happens to some people.  Your best bet is to get your butt into P.T. and if that don't help soon definitely see a specialist.
Hope this helps,
Troy

The same as what the last guy said.  I injured my shoulder lifting weights and then babied it for 6 months thinking that it would heal and the pain would go away but instead my shoulder froze as described in this thread.  4 months of therapy, 2 - 3 times a week later I was back to almost 100%.  I never got back to where I was before the freeze but I am no longer in pain and I do have mobility enough.  Go to the doctor and get it checked out and treated.  Don't wait like I did.

Good luck.

I tore my bicep a little over a year ago and went to the doctor and a specialist, who sent me to PT 3 times a week for 6 weeks.  There, they would hook me up to electrolysis (sp) for 20 minutes, then do some stretching, then some muscle building workouts (light lifting focused on each side of the bicep, and then end with a massage and coldpack.  This worked very well, besides being out of bowling the entire time I was in PT and a month afterwards.  I am now back to 100%, and actually have a little more range with my arm/shoulder.  I would definitely recommend going to PT as soon as possible, if possible.  If you have any questions, just ask me and I'd be glad to try and help you out.

Thanks for the info, guys!!
SuperSaw - you just scared me into calling the doctor...
Surgery scares the bejeezus out of me...
And - I can't become a wrongsider, because of a small rotator cuff tear - that I won't let them operate on. It's small now - and I don't want that to change.

mumzie - go see a chiropractor too.  One that specializes in sports related injuries.  One that knows mechanics of clavicle and scapulohumeral rhythm.  Quite often problems arising are secondary to improper joint function.  Too bad you aren't closer to me.  I could help you out.

Mumzie-
I don't have the exact same problem as you, but I do have early signs of arthritis, a supraspinatus(sp) tear, and deltoid bursitis in my right shoulder.  I received physical therapy for 2 months, and it helped tremendously.  Some ultrasound, bioelectric, massage, and infrared light therapy is what they put me on.  Also a lot of exercises.  Good luck with it...shoulder pain is a b!tch!!

I saw my chiropractor/acupuncturist today. I asked him to do ultrasound on the joint - and I went from having very limited movement when holding my arm straight out - to being able to get my hand over my head!!!!

Huge improvement. Now I'll keep working, stretching, icing, etc, and get in to pt asap. I have a 60 minute upper back, shoulder, arm, and neck massage scheduled for friday too. I'm encouraged - I can move it - it is a little uncomfortable, but not too bad!!!

Keep kicking me and telling me horror stories of shoulders that can't anymore. I'll listen to you - I promise!!

Hey,
just wanted to add my little story- about 6 years ago I think I dislocated my shoulder for the first time, but having not heard of it or experienced anything like it before, I decided it was nothing and to put off going to the doctor- big mistake! 30 more subluxations later (I could pop it back in myself, well, not conciously, but it would pop back in) I went to see the doctor and had surgery just last year, putting me out of bowling for a good 6 months. Now, my right arm doen't have the range of motion it used to, but at least I can bowl with a relatively sound mind that my shoulder isn't going to pop out during my delivery. Moral of the story: if you think something's up, GO SEE A DCOTOR!
