Old Urethane Balls..........Gotta Luv 'Em
« on: March 16, 2005, 11:52:01 PM »
Last night before league, I noticed we had a new lane man which shouldnt be a problem normally except that the machine is old and is constantly going on the fritz. I had bowled 2 games in practice on last nights left overs with my Sling Blade with a real good reaction and good scores, both well over 200. I figured I would start off league with the Sling Blade but figuring that I would have to go a little straighter at first. Boy was I wrong. During league warm-ups, it was evident that something was wrong. The Sling Blade was over-reacting and even one of our straighter, low-rev team members was having trouble staying off the nose. I figured, no problem, just keep moving left but that only made it worse. There was no oil and the new lane man was to inexperienced to notice anything was wrong with the machine while he was dressing the lanes. After splitting the first 3 frames in league, I had enough so I pulled out my Faball Blue Pearl Hammer that I use for 10 pins and toast. I could immediately tell the difference where less is actually more and better. Ended up salvaging a 610 series off of this Sahara Desert that had alot of guys pulling thier hair out. The average leader in this league (211) only shot a 535. He ended up using his spare ball which was like some sort of Vis-a-ball but he couldnt carry anything with it and he got frustrated and then started missing his spares. I ended up being the only 600+ on my pair. I guess the moral of this story is.........i was really glad that my spare/toast ball had some some guts (a real weight block) for extreme cases like this. I just recently replaced a Hammer Everclear with this Faball Blue Pearl Hammer because the Everclear hit like a limp noodle

I agree Bones, sometimes you just need to go "retro" with urethane. One of the newer guys on my pair was trying his first "performance" ball last night on this desert. He got real discouraged fast, to much speed or to far left and he would throw it thru the breakpoint or it would burn up, to soft or to much right and it would scream towards the 7 pin. He looked helpless, all I could do was keep thanking my decision to get a urethane piece back in my arsenal.

I could have probably hit the pocket well with my Everclear that I gave away, but I had went down that road before with it........it just wouldnt carry a 10 out. Urethane or even plastic with a real weight block like the XXXL was definantly the ticket last night.
