Push off
« on: May 26, 2010, 06:49:13 AM »
I've got a wierd problem I can't seem to correct.  I had a stroke about 2-3 years ago and am trying to get back some semblance of timing and balance.

My problem is that during my pushoff, my nonsliding foot slips and slides on me.  Just can't seem to get any traction and it's messing up by timing and balance.  I'm wearing SST8's.  Any ideas???

It could be a number of things starting with your shoes. Seeing that you wear SST 8's try some of the more tacky soles and heals, this will make it stick to the approach better. If it's not your shoe then it's probably your approach.  Talking about you non-slide foot slipping on your pushaway, I'm assuming you take a 3 or 5 step approach.  With that said you may be taking your first step too long which is going to push back more on the non-slide foot.  Try taking a shorter first step and see if that helps.

Thanks.  I can't change heels/soles on my nonsliding shoe.  4 Step approach.  I've tried taking sandpaper to the sole to rough it up a little.  Doesn't seem to help.  I hold the ball low to start, like Wayne Webb, Mike Scroggins.

You sure you can't because the SST 8's are interchangable from left to right handed?

Why can't you change the sole and heel on your non-sliding shoe. If you have SST8's you should be able to do this.. The slide and push off soles and heels are interchangeable with either shoe..

I have SST8s and they even have rubber slide soles for extra grip on your non slide foot. Use T-5. I use it and i'm a two hander flying through the air and pushing with most of my force on said sole.

I had the same problem with my 8's when I first got them so I picked up a t2 sole, no more slip.

If I'm reading this right, the problem comes as you transfer weight from your right to your left foot moving from your first to second step?

It sounds to me like your head is too far forwards/body is too far back (are you starting in a kind of sitting position?). Try and keep your bodyweight above your feet, and if you need to get lower, bend your knees instead.
