in theory, to ensure the most comfortable fingertip grip ball shouldn't your ring finger be drilled just a tad lower than your middle finger? Also shouldn't your thumbhole be shifted slightly left from your fingers (if you're a rightly) to ensure that you're not contorting your thumb in the least? Does any of this make sense to anyone, or am i just crazy?

The reason the ring finger span is longer than the middle finger span is due to geometry. Think of a right triangle. Here, A is the thumb, B is the middle and C is the right. This is from looking at the back of your hand and tracing lines with your hand outstretched. The segment from A to C is the hypotenuse and due to the pythagorean theorem it must be longer than the other two segments, including A-B, the middle-finger to thumb line.

What did Andy say?
Actually Andy, that is a very good explanation. I have my thumb directly under the middle finger. My span is 4 5/8 and 4 3/4.

thanks for the info volsfan, i'm definitely going with a dropped ring finger on my next ball, plus i have to find the right amount of forward and lateral pitch to perfectly fit my thumb.

Speed, do you feel that your ring finger is stretched, at least compared to the middle? It could be possible that there is such a large difference between the raw lengths of your middle and ring fingers that the Pythagorean thing doesn't apply. But I'm not sure of the numbers on that.

yeah, but i'm only talking about a few mms lower than my middle finger, nothin drastic. As i hold my hand in front of me, palm to my face, if i position my fingers and thumb for what would be their inserted place into the ball, with zero contortion of any sort, my thumb is swung way right with a sh*t load of lateral pitch and a pretty decent amount of forward pitch and the ring finger is noticeable lower
