inconsistency
« on: October 04, 2004, 06:18:37 AM »
Recently, I was reading some reviews of a new ball.  The author of the review called the ball very inconsistent at the breakpoint.  So, that got me thinking.....what causes the inconsistent breakpoint?

Here is what I came up with, in my mind anyway.  We've all had a ball that we disliked.  It has also been noted that certain drill patterns work better for different people.

I think that since we are all human, we are all doomed for error.  If a ball doesn't "work" the way we wish it too, then it is inconsistent or not a good drill pattern, etc.  I think that certain drillings/balls expose or magnify our weaknesses.  True???

Lemons happen, look at the Blazing Inferno, but I blame myself for about 90% of the balls I didn't like.  I either drilled it with a layout I knew wouldn't work for me but b/c I am stubborn, I did it anyway.  OR  I tried to make the ball something it wasn't.

I don't particularly care for stacked leverage drillings.  Why? Because I like to swing to the oil line.  If I tug it some, the aggressive layout still allows the ball to over hook.  That makes the ball inconsistent at the breakpoint. I mean after all, its the balls fault not mine, right?

It is still about matching up the bowler, ball, and lane condition.

I can take a ball and have an inconsistent reaction on one lane condition but on another condition it will work great.

The easiest example of this is how many people have a favorite ball that reacts great at their home house on a league shot and when they go to ABC nationals the ball either jumps or skids on virtually every shot?

Now it is not always the ball. We’ve all seen bowlers who don’t throw it even close the same shot to shot.

Bad match ups magnify the smallest differences in the bowler’s release. Differences so small they many bowler’s cannot feel them.

Often a ball and drill can be very condition specific and look horrible most of the time but find the right condition and bam!

Bones, let me try this one more time.  If I take a ball, regardless of the drill pattern, and throw it over the same spot at the arrows and breakpoint.  The reaction should be the same every time.

Now, if I take that same ball and miss my mark 2 left or 2 right.  The reaction could be different b/c we didn't hit our mark.

That is what I am getting at.  The reaction is different b/c we are not robots.  Yes, different drillings can magnify our mistakes more than others.

The consistency lies in our hands not the ball.
