Drilling the pin

I realize person and core really effects the result, but typically what kkind if reaction will drilling a finger on the pin give you?

There is nothing magical about drilling through the pin. If you lay the ball out and the pin is in the way then drill it out.

Reaction-wise it will differ only slightly from a ball with the pin just above or just below the fingers.  In other words, moving the pin that extra 1/2 inch, or whatever, shouldn't change reaction very much at all.

In my opinion, matching up ball surface to your condition will contribute more to overall reaction than a slight variation of where the pin is (or isn't).  Hope this helps.

Most of the ball manufactures will recommend, if the pin comes close to the finger hole after laying out the drill pattern, just drill it out rather than drilling close to the pin. This usually just results in cracking around the pin. I have a couple of balls that the pin is drilled out because the drill pattern fell just about on the pin with my span. I agree with Notclay, nothing magical with drilling out the pin.

I drill it out all the time on my own stuff. For me personally it gives a slightly rollier motion. Most of my tournament stuff has a pin in the ring finger layout.

As others have said....it isn't anything special. I stumbled onto it by drilling one out years ago and loving the reaction on slicker patterns. I typically don't like pin down drillings so this has replaced that for me.

Good luck

thanks for the info.  i had never really seen it much til monday night, someone on my league has nearly the same span as me, and has a Defiant (i have one too, drilled pin up, thumb kicked out to the side) and his is drilled pin in the finger.  His ball is much more skid snappy, and mine is much more arcy.  I haven't found much use for mine yet, and he likes mine much more than his, so i was considering trying his on the fresh, and maybe swapping with him.  It will just depend on how his reacts for me on the fresh
