Children do not belong at the alley during league times.IMHO! That is what bumper bowing is for!

Infants do not belong in the bowling alley, period.  Not only is there the injury risk, but also all the people who like to touch babies with their grubby bowling hands and get them sick.  That being said, I have a 6 year old daughter who has grown up around bowling and bowls in a kids league.  She has been taught from an early age to respect what people are doing at the lanes, and that if she comes to watch me bowl, she sits down with whatever she brought with her and is quiet.  The responsibility here lies with the parents to teach their kids that the other bowlers in the league are not like free babysitting for the night, you need to look after your own kid, and if you can't handle that then you should not bring them there in the first place!  I find it rewarding when my daughter watches me do something special at the lanes, and I enojy her company, but to the parents who do not watch their kids, please leave them home with the babysitter!

Only bowlers are allowed in the bowlers' area.  At my home center, the employees would be down there telling her she has to keep the infant out of the area.  They would also provide a playpen for her if she wanted it and set it up on the concourse right behind her lanes.

It IS a safety issue having an infant in the bowlers' area, an accident waiting to happen.

At one time I was dating a woman who had a 2 year old child, and for some dumb reason I thought it would be a good idea to bring her and her daughter to a league night.

Worst idea I ever had.  Long story short, she ended up spilling a pitcher of water all over the spots where we sit.  Finally I gave my GF at the time my keys, and told her take the baby to the car.

NEVER AGAIN

I would never bring an infant to the bowling center period during league or open play because my center allows smoking.  Virginia still has not outlawed smoking from bowling centers.  I would not an infant to inhale the smoke.

If they did not allow smoking, I would not bring them to league because it would be a distraction and a safety hazard.

I know that most leagues have rules for this. I personally feel that kids of a certain age and above, 12+, could be down in the area as long as no one is using those seats.

My league, there is hardly anyone that sits in the seatee area. My kids do come and watch me bowl some nights, mostly my oldest, and he likes to sit in the seatee area. Seeing that he is 15 and is not in anyones way, I do not see a problem and no one else does either.

As far as an infant, that is an accident waiting to happen. But I do not see a problem with older children.

I understand.  I hate kids in the bowlers' area too.  You never know what they are going to do,when they are going to shout out.  They just don't belong in the bowlers' area.  I don't care how old they are.  If they are infants then you have all the crap needed to keep them happy in the bowlers' area too.  And when they are unhappy and tired the relentless screaming is near torture.  The mother is distracted and not watching when she's supposed to bowl and often the father is too.  You are absolutely right that it is very dangerous.  Toddlers get their hands in between the balls in the return, run up behind you, get up on the approach.  And babies are sitting on what is most times less then secure perches on the benching area or surrounding counters.  If they are on the floor then they are in danger of getting stepped on and tripped over.  I really don't know why a  parent would think of putting their infant in that kind of situation.

Both our leagues have rules that say all children, including infants, are to be kept out of the bowlers' area.  This usually means the seating up on the concourse, which is fine to some extent, until the parents start carting in  play pens, toys etc...... basically taking up the entire area behind the lanes too.

When my folks bowled, we had a sitter.  Don't know why that's changed now.  My folks would never have brought us kids to a bowling alley at night, which is basically a tavern or pool hall with bowling.  We had bedtimes and no matter if my folks were home or not, we had to adhear to them.

My suggestion would be to approach the President and request a league meeting where the officers (not you) bring this issue up as a problem and vote to have all children out of the sette area.  They should be on the concourse only and if the parents need to watch them closely then they need to be on the concourse too.  It is not your job to actually verbalize the situation in the meeting.  That is why you have officers.

To all those that are parents that are now going to argue upon these points.  Keep in mind that your kids are only cute and tolerable to YOU.

You get that no matter where you go. People are always wanting to come up and see a baby, restaurant, stores, you name it, there is always someone who wants to hold your baby. Hard telling where their hands have been.

Were we all not kids at some point. I wish my parents had done things with me that I do with my kids. they were homebodies. I never touched a bowling ball until I was 18 years old...... other than in gym class.... I would never, although my kids were taught to respect other bowlers and even lane courtesy, ask my kids to not go with me if they chose.. after all if they don't learn the game from a young age, we are not going to have a league to bowl in when we are older.... The exception to this would be a high stakes scratch league..... or a seriuos mens league.... if you are bowling in a mixed league they are set up for FAMILIES TO HAVE FUN!!!!

My son was in a bowling alley the day after he was born, as was I. It is in our genes. I have never been distracted by children in bowling center, there have been times I have feared for their safety when mom and dad let them run around on the approached during open play. Children are the future of our sport, as long as they are under control (as they should be in any public setting) I have no problems with them what so ever. I am sorry if your league night is too important for family.

I have no issue with having kids in the center I really dont care about that but when an infant on the floor in the bowler sette area I have an issue some one could hurt the kid not even see it and step on it. up on the concourse hell I used to play there all the time as a kid watching my dad bowl but never in the sette.

Like I said, I don't want them in the bowlers' area, not the center.  They can be in the center (though why parents would expose their kids to copious amounts of alcohol and related behavior is beyond me).

The adult league is NOT FAMILY NIGHT!  It is not a Jr./Adult league it is not a place for children.  If family is what you are interested in then join a Jr/Adult league or stay at home and do an activity that INCLUDES your children.

Sure the "youth is our future".  I've heard it all before.  But in the right environment in appropriate places.  I didn't join league to babysit or put up with whining bored kids.

None of our 200+ leagues in our association are set up for "families to have fun" except the Jr/Adult and Junior leagues.  You want family fun?  Join a Jr/Adult league.

Pass all the league rules you want, anyone is allowed in the bowlers area because parents do not care about other people. I have seen this violated twice so far in both my leagues. You can tell these people to get their kids out but they keep coming.

The big problem with my alley is it's a Brunswick Zone alley where they ripped out the pit area and replaced it with a bowler area. This has the tables there along with all the houseballs and the access to it is very easy and there is nothing for anyone to think that people that isn't in the league to come in there.

That's what you get when you convert a serious league bowling alley into a Disneyland bowing alley. It really sucks on one league where it is a 5 player league with tables that hold 4 people.
