Need Advice - Ball Choice for my Elderly Pops
« on: September 23, 2022, 01:25:29 PM »
Hey guys! I need some help choosing a ball for my dad. He's an elderly man (76 this year), low speed (11-12mph), decent revs (225- 250 rpms), and suffers from very mild Parkinson's - so walking straighter is definitely greater. And we bowl at an extremely high friction center - HPLs with 30 years of wear.

Dad's currently got a Raw Hammer pearl - the silver & blue one. What would be something with BOTH less cover and less core? I was looking at the Rhinos, but I'm not too well versed in gear these days and would love any and all help!

Cheers

Brunswick Twist might be a good fit

Brunswick twist, or Storm Tropical Surge, will do the trick for him.

Does he have a plastic ball for spares? If so try adding some surface to it and seeing how it does on strikes as well. Maybe an option

I'm older than your Dad (by several years) and have similar speed and decent revs.  I take a lot of meds. so I can understand that walking straighter is the best approach.  Anyway, I have both the Raw (hybrid) which I had the pro-shop change the surface to 2000 (don't like compound) and add polish and the Rhino which I hit with a 500 Abralon pad to get rid of the compound and added hand polish.

Between the two, I like the Rhino the best on higher friction conditions.  The Raw hooks a little more but, for me, is a little less controllable than the Rhino.

Hope this will help some.

This sounds good, guys! The Twist seems like a winner.

And I forgot to mention this, but for the Raw Pearl - we tried to kill the ball with as little surface as possible - we went 1k, 2k, 3k, 5k ctd, 5k ctd, and polish. The lanes have so much friction, it struggles to push. I think the cover is just extremely strong for what it is!

thedjs, thank you so much for this! I'm glad to know what the Rhino is capable of. I'm thinking the Twist seems like the best option.

My Pops is 90! Still bowling strong. He throws it about 9mph.

I've got him in older, weaker equipment......a polished Slingshot.

If the Twist doesn't work out for him, you might try a Radical Spy. Most people use it for a spare ball but it will hook a bit on high friction surfaces.
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

I can't recommend the Twist enough. It sounds like a perfect fit for the bowler and condition.
