Title: Inserts V vs T
Post by: xrayjay on August 08, 2014, 01:49:40 AM
The last two batches of turbos seems to have variances in their sizes. I normally use 23 and 3's...but I had to purchase 25's cause the 3 either fit or didn't. I want switch to vise and I have a few questions...

*Are vise sizes same as turbos? I know the lift on the vise are a bit bigger than the turbos. I'm going order Vise this time and I just want to make sure I get it right.

Right know I'm using sizes 23 and 25 with turbo quads.

Thanks

*stupid question ;)

Sounds like you have a similar size hand to me, I use 25 for my middle and 23 for my ring.

The last time I used Vise, they use a different system for identifying sizes. I had either a 4 or 4.5 for my middle and I don't remember the ring finger size I had. The drilled hole size I believe is the same except when it comes to some of the larger sizes

Well, the numbers are the same, so the size is the same right? ;)

Seriously, though, to me the Vise inserts run (very)slightly bigger than the equivalent Turbo size. Tenth Frame, or Pro Sports grips, on the other hand,  used to run significantly bigger than the equivalents from Vise & Turbo.

At least, that's my experience, YMMV.

Vise and Turbo are close enough in size you will use the same size, you might feel a slight difference.  Both have half sizes, and larger sizes use 1 1/32 hole.  PS are also close, you would probably use the same size, with a slight difference in feel.  TF you would need to go at least a full size larger as they run small.  TF you would need at least 13 and 3 if you are currently using 25 and 23.

Xray, did we specifically put Turbo in you ball when I drilled them?  If not you were using Vise then.  Are you sure it's the grip and not the finger going in the grip?

FWIW I normally use Pro Sports Contour Power grips in 25/32" & 3/4". I have tried and like Vise-Grips inserts, but, for me, they run slightly larger. So when using Vise, I use their half size, 49/64" & 47/64" inserts.

As itsallaboutme says, it could also be your fingers changing for any number of reasons. For me, a little arthritis and a little too much writing and my middle finger has changed slightly. I need to either open up the 31/32" drilled hole with sandpaper before gluing in the inserts OR I need to open up the insert with a little acetone.

At one point, my driller was using a worn, needs-to-be-sharpened 31/32" drill bit on the middle finger hole, because it drilled a hole just a tiny bit larger than a good sharpened 31/32" drill bit.

So, if your driller is using either a new or a recently sharpened drill bit, the 31/32" hole can be a little smaller than you had been used to.

we used turbos but some were vise and...TF? The TF I pulled out sizes 6 and 8 on a dv8 ball. My middle finger did change a bit, but the size 3's that I have were either slightly bigger or really snug. The ring finger still size 23/32...

my middle finger did change in size. I did the acetone last year on some of the size 3 but it just made the insert too soft/weaker? shorten life. I think I left it too long soaking...I don't remember who long. (I use acetone to unglue my RC tires on my 1/10 and 1/8 scale rigs - my other hobby and I soak them for days lol)

Anyway, I prefer the firmer feel now, I just seem to hit up on the ball more when the inserts starts to get softer....when they're (turbos) new, it feels great. I'm going through these inserts rather quickly nowadays.

Just man up and go without.  It's a nice firm feel.

I never soak them. Acetone dissolves plastics.
I wrap a piece of cloth around my pinky, spray the cloth with acetone and rub the back inside of the insert. It doesn't soften the material. It removes a little at a time, just enough to increase the inner diameter. You can see the color come off on the cloth.

wow....now I know why one insert only lasted less than 15 games or so..... live an learn... Thanks for that info....

you know, this is the second time you said this to me.  ;D :o ..next thing, you'll tell me not to bevel if I go insert-less...... I want to keep my part time hand model'n job.  seroiusly though, I"ve thought about it....

First of all, the main difference between Vise & Turbo is shape and secondly,  it can be the bowling ball you are putting them in, densities & covers effect the hole as in the way the expand or contract conversely the 'feel' will be effected
It's not always as easy 'it's the insert'

I have had a problem now and then but not often, with a variation of size in the same size of a Turbo Grip. I have never experienced this with Vise Grips. However, I prefer Turbo most of the time as they seem to be not sticky like Vise are for me. Vise are ok after they get a bit of wear on them, but when new they are sticky, at least for me they are.
