attn: all BTM readers
« on: June 22, 2005, 08:01:45 AM »
im reading the article about approaches on page 36-40. WHen i get to page 38 i realize that there is a type-o. Now, this is a very disturbing type-o. For all BTM owners, you can find this type-o on page 38, third paragraph on the right hand side next to Pete Webers picture. Ive taken the time to scan this part of the article into the computer and i will post it here.

Take a look, tell me what you SEE...

You guys really need to stop your highfalutin vocabulary lesson and realize that there really is no need for a knowledge of all the ridiculous vocabulary out there. Vocabulary is one of the easiest ways to play off to someone that you are an educated individual (and that you can belittle others for showing no respect for language), when it really just shows that you have no understanding for the purpose of language. Language is meant to pass a message in any means possible. There are so many ways to give the exact same message that it is really just plain dumb to memorize them all.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but it peeves me off to no end when someone acts like a person is an idiot for not understanding meaningless variations of language.

Stan,

Yes, they have been abusive and unnecessarily harsh on the poor kid, but, NO, it is most definitely not meaningless. Language is an essential part of the way we interface with the rest of society. Unless we all speak some street gibberish, far too much education has been obliterated in an attempt to get people earning money from the age of 6. If we can't communicate in the written and the verbal "word", then we might as well jump off a cliff. Too many people, even here on ballreviews, attempt to type the way they talk; they fail to communicate with too many other people.

Yes, I agree, language is an essential part of any functioning society.

The only thing that I want to point out is that using "irascible" or "cantankerous" instead of "testy" is pretty damn pointless, no matter what connotation is provided by the first two words (and btw, I had to go to dictionary.com to find those examples, I don't have THAT much of a grasp on vocabulary. I'll stick with remembering the theory of relativity and the big bang theory versus "cantankerous" anyday).

We are judged not only by the friends that we keep, but by the language that we speak.

I do agree; however, that there was no need for insults.  A short vocabulary lesson would have sufficed.

It's 2 fold.

First, the fact he would post a typo that he thought was a racial slur in a comedic manner is inappropriate.

Second, There is a group of "youngsters" here that have infiltrated what used to be a fairly vibrant & intelligent bowling forum. This was just one example of the idiocy they've brought & it's just a matter of some of us reaching a boiling point.

As the person who edited this article, I'm a little embarrassed that I never even gave it a thought as to possibly being construed as a racial slur. I guess it shows my age. I was educated before political correctness. As for it being similar to kink, I think of something that has a kink as something that is not stretched out all the way or unrolled or unraveled as much as is possible...like a kink in a chain or rope. A chink is as the definition above says. I'll probably never see this expression again though without being reminded of this thread, so your efforts weren't wasted. lol

Jim, well said, but I think that the real problem is not what was written in the article, but the fact that so many people, not just kids, have a very limited vocabulary.  I guess in some respects, it must be generational.

Bjaardker, I know I'm one of the "youngsters", but at least I use proper grammar and vocabulary in my idiotic posts.  You have to give me that much.
