Interesting.  I'm eager to hear your results.  My 5-year old is a two hander.  I didn't show him anything, he just did it naturally.  I've tried it in passing, in an effort to help figure out what his common mistakes could be and how to correct them.

I do have a question, why didn't you just consider working on the one-handed release?  Why made you feel a total revamp of style was needed in order to surpass your current ability?

Thanks for your question, agroves. I decided to attempt the two-handed conversion because I have really struggled to break ground when trying to retool my one-handed delivery. Also, I've done a great deal of research on two-handed bowling, and, through that, I've come to believe that this style has a remarkable amount of potential to offer bowlers who can execute it properly. Since I have access to some of the greatest coaching minds in the sport, I figured this was my one and only chance to take a crack at this. I guess we'll see how it all shakes out.

Good luck to your son in his two-handed bowling endeavors. If you have any additional questions for me as Project Two Hands moves along, please don't hesitate to ask.

Looks like an interesting project..I'm sure there's a great deal to be learned regardless of which approach you ultimately end up using.

I think you're exactly right, tgs300. I hope we all learn something when this is all said and done.

Additionally, a new post has been added, and video is on the way for next week. In the meantime, please keep the questions and comments coming!

Agroves...

Both of my sons became two handers around age 4 or 5.  Completely on their own!

All kids that age perceive if they bowl a few games that they want a heavier ball and the only way they can do it is two handed on the side.

My older one had a 192 at arond age 5 and was then told that year in Yabba(a while ago) that 2 handed was illegal and he could not do it Yabba.  He cried for a week and quit for the year!

He came back a one hander and was not bad....but not spectacular.  A bunch of good 6s!  But in the last 6 months I mentioned to him on an oily day....try it!

He is now a sharply rising bowler with a ton of frequent high 6s and near 300s including in competition.  Recently he had 11 in a 263 in the high school state championships.  Still developing comfort on the deeper lines he is learning to play!

I maintain on a crown...why bowl any other way!?  Wish I had taken it up after a thumb injury instead of becoming.....a lefty!

I've been bowling 2 handed for 15 years now, the early years were definately tough as no one had ever saw anyone throw 2 handed around here except one guy that has won PBA National titles. Everyone told me to change because " its a disgrace to the game" or "its not the right way to bowl", I used these comments to push me even harder to get to be the best that I could be with it. Its great to see more people giving it a shot and it getting more publicity. I've had a lot of people try it while bowling next to me watching me practice and a lot of it has been pretty ugly lol.

The biggest thing that people have trouble with is matching your speed to your high rev rate, without being able to use a high backswing to do so, and while doing this still be accurate and smooth with your approach. It will take a while to get consistent with it and accurate. After you get that down, I would focus on learning how to manipulate the revs to cut them down a little when needed, and learn both primary hand and top hand position changes to help manipulate your roll and tilt. These type of things will be hard to learn from someone that is new to coaching 2 handed, as really only a good 2 hander will know these things.

Good luck with your 2 handed venture, if you ever need anything, feel free to PM me on here.

JD,

Well, I certainly have a lot to learn that's for certain. I will definitely keep your offer in mind as our project moves along. In the meantime, thanks for writing in. Feel free to write in again whenever you feel the need.

I have been bowling 2 handed for about 5 months now.   I have my BS in exercise science.   I am CSCS and PES certified.

2 handed in this short time I've shot 300, 299 front 9, 804.    I contribute this to body mechanics and understanding how the body moves and functions.

My high 1 handed is two 300's and an 804 and 800.

My form gets better every time out for 2 handed and it's all technique.  I use a non reactive ball most the time for 2 handed and am looking for something slightly more aggressive.

If possible I'd love to be involved with your experience on either the science end or the bowling end.

thanks

I was worried about that from my own teammate, so I waited for a week for him to be gone and shot just above average.   I've been waiting to get sh*t from people from starting 2 handed then going 1 handed or vice versa.  But I haven't.  If you are worried about that, have the rule book ready to defend yourself.

To me it has just become another ball change.  If one thing doesn't work try another.

I just found out that they censor your language on here.  I'm surprised.  the word sh*t was censored

Don't worry about what other people say to you and how you bowl. There's 2 guy's that started doing the 2 hand form, both are in their early 20's and felt they can do better after some practice with the new style. They both also average just over 200 (201 and 205 i beleive). They are currenly averaging in the mid 180's and are improving every week. Trying this new style is just like the traditional 1 hand style, has step's to go through before getting to the same level as you were before.

I can do this new style myself but not with alot of accuracy. I do however feel pretty comfortable with it.

Good Luck Gene and keep us updated.

Tonight for the first time, it was brought to the president that I was throwing my first ball 2 handed and my ten pins 1 handed.

She got out the rule book and showed it to them and they still didn't believe her.  lol
