Title: Interesting experience on Scorpion last night
Post by: Raven829 on November 27, 2007, 09:07:33 AM
We bowled a team of very good bowlers last night on Scorpion.  A couple of the guys believe they are God's gift to bowling.  Now I know how one is "supposed" to attack these patterns, but I went against the grain because I didn't have a decent look from inside.

I moved way outside and targeted 5 at the arrows with my breakpoint around 10.  Basically I was almost pointing it.  I had a very good look almost all night because I was the only bowler out there.  I made a couple moves left with my feet but kept the same basic target of 5.  To make a long story short, I was told by 2 guys that shot 568 and 478 that I played the lanes incorrectly, even though I had a 610.  My response was: "Judging by the scores, I'm going to assume that I wasn't the one who played them incorrectly."  FWIW, I got swept by a guy that shot 650.  Next high on the pair was jerk #1, followed by a 500 set.

I know that the lanes will generally dictate how they want to be played, but nothing is etched in stone.  On tougher shots, if you don't have something decent in one spot, try something else!  You never know.

Lol that's awesome. So what if you didn't play the typical line, it worked for you and you out-shot them. I love that. Great job man.

You are correct, noting is etched in stone, and sometimes you have to go against the grain.
Even on the typical house shot, your not always going to be able to play the lanes like you would like. Good job on finding an area nobody else plays

I play Shark off the corner, much like Norm Duke does. It's the only way I can score on it.

The correct way to play the lanes is what works for you. I'm glad I wasn't in your shoes when jerk#1 spoke up because he'd probably punched me after I laughed in his grille.

I love shooting from the corner like that. I was a very similar line to you on my experience with Scorpion, and I shoot very direct on the Shark, and they all worked very well with me. I'm glad you beat those pompous bowlers, I hate guys who think they're the best, it makes beating them so much sweeter.

Throw out the crap about how you are "supposed" to play any of the patterns and figure out what works best.

Playing a pattern "correctly" means finding the friction or finding a way to get the proper entry angle to the pocket.  For your release and your ball surfaces/drillings, standing right and pointing it may work better for you than trying to play tight.  I had to point my Special Agent because it didn't want to roll up and carry well from the inside line on the Scorpion.  However, I had to play a small swing inside with my lightly sanded Total NV on the same pattern.  It's all about matching up every factor, not just the little guide sheet that says how most people usually play the pattern.

Case in point from the weekend's show.  While seemingly everyone was looking for a line around 5th arrow or left of it, Mika found great success with his Fury piping it up the 7-8 board.  He only found that too late.

I applaud you for making your own assumptions and outshooting the moron.
