So recently our machine has started acting like a Determinator. Never done it before, but all the sudden no matter how we put the ball in the machine, in 2-3 minutes it will find a "preferred spin axis" and continue to rotate the ball the exact same way for the duration of the cycle. I can stop and turn it or rotate it, and in another 2-3 minutes it will be back exactly like it was before, and it's leading to either having to babysit it or some really uneven and inconsistent finishes. Has anybody had this problem before? Are the pads worn out? Cranked too tight or not tight enough?

When a ball is allowed to spin freely it will rotate towards its PSA.
This is the whole idea of a machine that allows you to locate a PSA. It can be done by many different methods. Apparently you have created a new one.

This is a WAG because I don't have a refinishing machine. The ball seems to be rotating freely, I'll bet there are more than one elements that rotate it in different directions to achieve "random" surface and one of them isn't working. -- JohnP
