Equipment Overlap?
« on: July 29, 2003, 01:12:43 AM »
Ok.  I am wondering about how much my equipment overlaps, and how many conditions I can possible cover with my current selection.  Mostly am looking between the X-Factor, Element, and Eraser Particle Pearl.

If I leave the Element at factory, take the EPP to 600 with a little polish, and shine the X-factor to around 1500 would I be able to cover mid-heavy through mid-light conditions?  Or are they too similar?

I plan on picking up a Black Cherry Bomb or a Phenom or a Throttle to cover the heavier end, and my too hot shined to 2000 covers the lighter end and spares.

And just a general question to go with the topic, how much overlap is it ok to have?  On a given condition you could have balls with about the same reaction with one giving you a bit more hit and/or recovery/area.  Is it ok to have 2 or 3 balls that do almost the same thing then?  Because I sure find I buy too many balls that do the exact same thing

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's how my ideal arsenal would be set up:
VERY heavy - resin
VERY heavy - particle
Heavy/med -resin
heavy/med - particle
med/light - resin
med/light - particle
spare ball
VERY heavy - resin pearl
VERY heavy - particle pearl
Heavy/med -resin pearl
heavy/med - particle pearl
med/light - resin pearl
med/light - particle pearl
light - urethane pearl or 3 piece

Now - I'm close, but not quite there. I seem to be a little sparse in the ultra high end, and a little heavy in the medium area. I'm also light on the particle equipment. Just picked up an eliminator that changes the balance a little. Gotta unload that X factor, though!

OK, ELement for medium heavy. fine
Which Storm  is for what condition?
I can't imagine either one for medium light.
I thought the X-factor came from the factory at 1500 grit polished?

How much? There should be some, otherwise you won't cover all of the condition. Exactly how much depends, in my opinion, on what you are comfortable with.

Well, I have been migrating towards the opinion that, if it is convenient and you can afford it monetarily and weight-wise, that for each area/amount and length of oil, you should either have the balls (bowling) or the release to allow you to cover this condition when it is wide open (no spottiness or oil or dry and no out-of-bounds) and when it is closed (that is, when there is OOB and/or spottiness). This implies a big hooking and a small hooking ball for the same conditions. I think of the small hooking ball as a control ball.

For example: I have 2 balls right now for what I think of as medium-light to *almost* medium oil conditions. One, the DynoThane Thing, is a large hook; it is for when the lane condition is wide open. I also use a Brunswick Red/Black Monster to cover the same oil pattern, but it is for when there is an OOB or
spottiness, as it hooks earlier and has a smaller backend.
