Are they legal for use in the United States ??  I know, bad question...just want to know.

Almost 99% of them are. If they are made by your typical companies here in the US it is more like 99.8%

The few that aren't usbc approved from US manufactures were because of the coverstock or some other minor reason. They are listed on the non conforming list on USBC website.
