A few years back Ebonite (I think) did a study and found that Windex and rubbing alcohol won't hurt, but they're simply not strong enough to really clean the oil off the surface, some of the dirt, yes...  That's why most of the ball cleaners are stronger - to break down the oil.  Most people don't give them enough time to actually work, though.  Spray it all over the ball, then WAIT 30 SECONDS or so, THEN wipe it off.  Most of us are too impatient, or lazy, or whatever...

Simple Green, used straight, can take motor oil off your driveway, I've used for years at about a 50/50 mix with water and it cleans the ball very well, and safely, because it's not an oil based cleaner.  The guys who say it leaves a residue on the ball are feeling the oil left there from the lanes, not the product, it breaks down oil.  I can get my equipment squeaky (or tacky) using Simple Green and some patience.

I have tried Ebonite Powerhouse cleaner, Storm Reacta-Clean, and several others.  Most of them do a good job if you'll give them time to work.  I like Simple Green because it's cheap and effective when used properly.

Yeah, what he said...  Simple Green and water 50/50. I let it sit for about 10 seconds, and/or use liberally.  Sometimes, use Storm Reacta Clean after this, ball is pretty squeeky clean.

As far as Windex goes, we used it watered down in the shop, just for cleaning wax pencil lines and dust off the ball, that's about all it is good for.  Windex is too weak to clean the ball much less hurt it.

Just because they make it in your size, doesn't mean you should wear it!!!

To allow more time for the cleaner( Simple Green; etc.) to work, a guy suggests wrapping up the ball with a towel soaked in the cleaner. Sounds good but it may take too much cleaner to do 1 ball. If you keep using the towel for other balls then OK.

What about just use water to clean off after using the cleaner( Simple Green; etc.)? I tried it a few times on my new ball and it stays very tacky.
