thumb pain
« on: May 16, 2010, 08:43:15 AM »
easy question:
i am left handed and my current thumb pitch is zero front to back and 1/8th right. I have a lot of pain on the left side of my thumb, to clarify, when i say left side i mean when i hold my thumb straight up like a hitch hiker it the left side which actualy becomes the right side when i put my hand in the ball. What can i do to get rid of the pain.

Do you get a blister where it hurts? How often do you bowl?
It can depend on many factors. But its proabably the thumb pitch that are a bit messed up.

no blister, but i have been bowling for 21 years now so i have a good calaouse on both sides of my thumb, in the average week i will put in around ten to twelve hours of practice if not more, usually about an hour to hour and a half at a time.

if you are unsure of lateral (left/right) pitch then you can always grab a can of soda and see where your thumb naturally points to. If it points towards your middle finger or a little toward the index finger then you need 1/8" right pitch like you have, further then that and you may need more then 1/8".

Lateral pitch is VERY important and I think many drillers think its simply a means to help you get out or hold onto the ball... which to me is complete BS as I had the wrong lateral all these years and as soon as I went to my proper lateral pitch my pain went away and the callous is disappearing, plus my release is much cleaner.

anytime you feel pressure on the side of your thumb, it is usually a sign that you need pitch in the direction of the pain/callous.

my thumb calls for 1/8 right however when i do that i get the pain. does anyone think that pitching the whole left will help or should i just go back to neutral left to right and small amount of reverse pitch

From your description left would be the wrong way to go.  Try 1/4 right.  --  JohnP

I believe if you are having issues with pain and blisters/calluses which are believed to be caused by pitches ypo are supposed to pitch in the direction of the pain. You mentioned going to a reverse, but from your description of the problem that wiil do you no good b/c you with be reverse with impropel lateral pitch and you will most likely start to pinch/squeeze due to the reverse and begin to callus at the base of the thumb.

My advice would be to pitch the thumb in the direction of the pain, whether it be left, right, forward or back.

"1/8 to the right"  I'll take that to mean towards your palm...

What weight ball do you use?
Do you use tape in your thumb?
Do you work a lot with your hands?

Maybe try skin protection tape...

Wrap a piece of Green skin protection tape around the bottom of your thumb...
Then add a small piece of beige skin protection tape on the top of your thumb...

It will make the ball feel lighter and take some of the strain off your thumb...

good luck

Do you use a round or oval thumbhole?  It could be that the degree of your oval may be slightly off.   i'd definately check your lateral pitch as well...

There's a reason we use right and left instead of toward or away from the palm.  That reason is that right and left are definitive no matter if the bowler is right or left handed.  The OP is left handed, so answer your own question.  And in the future stick with right and left.  --  JohnP
