throwing balls of different weight in your arsenal - bad idea?
« on: October 10, 2006, 03:39:19 PM »
just curious if 1lb difference between balls in your arsenal is a bad idea and really noticeable?
currently the balls i throw are 15lb'ers but im considering buying a limited ball i really want(pink hammer) that is a 16lb'er. ignorning physical strength can u see anything wrong switching between balls that have a 1lb weight difference such as throwing off timing, technique, feel, etc?

I have 4 16lbs and 1 15lbs.  I feel a bit of a difference in the weight (ball speed primarily, but not timing, technique or feel).  The only thing I have to remind myself is to not muscle the ball, and to maintain the same speed (or really close) as to what my 16's travel.  As far as timing, that will only matter if you REALLY muscle the ball through at the release...that one pound DOES make a difference when it's travelling through at 24MPH versus 16MPH.  Momentum increases as a piece of mass times velocity.  As velocity increases, the change in momentum increases at that same factor.  So, with a 24MPH velocity at release, the momentum with the 15 and the 16lb ball have a greater difference than than the momentums at 16MPH.  If you are one with a huge ball speed, this might create a problem.  However, if you don't have a large ball speed, it's not so much of an issue.

Good question reefer... I use all 15# equipment, but I've been tossing around the idea of dropping down to 14# for a spare ball mainly to up the speed slightly and cut down any hook on corner shots.....
Dunno if I'd want to use a lighter or heavier ball for regular equipment though. I can easily feel the difference between my old 16# equipment and my current stuff. Even though it's only a pound, it feels like 5#....

thats really interested about feel the llb difference.  i may just buy the ball if i can get a really good deal on it and see what happens.  physically i dont think ill have a problem jumping to a 16lb'er but just worried about the feel throwing off my game such as switching balls within frames, shooting a spare.
ive always thrown 15lbs but never a 16 just cuz its been a matter of sticking with what you're used to. wish hammer(ebonite) would release the pink hammer again..

I can notice a 2 oz difference in my equipment. Really! Maybe it's my weak hand, the result of two surgeries back in the eighties, but anything over an ounce heavier than my regular weight and I can definitely notice it. Just today I took a ball to my driller and said that it felt a bit heavy. He weighed it and it was 2 1/2 ounces over the normal weight.

I have ALL my equipment tweaked to weigh in at 14.9 ounces give or take an ounce and am a firm believer in getting one's arsenal to weigh relatively the same from ball to ball (amazing in pressure situations how heavy the ball can feel) I do though throw a 14 pounder for my spares.

I use 15 and 16 pound eqipment and I can tell you from personal experience you will notice a difference in the weights. As long as you can throw both around the same speed and keep your delivery the same you should not have a problem though. My speed only varies by about 1 to 2/10 of a mile per hour when I switch from 15 to 16 but my delivery stays the same. But I do like the 15 pounders better for the simple fact the 16s will wear you down esspecially if you are not use to it

I use 15lb for strike balls. Been using a 14 White Dot
for the last 5 years. Havn't had any problems at all,but I don't
think I would intermingle 15lb and 16lb for strike balls. Could
create a timing and speed problem.
The more I practice,the luckier I get.
