Is buying a bowling ball on-line really a good deal?
« on: February 03, 2005, 01:50:56 AM »
I have seen many balls for sale on line and thought, "that's a good price, I should buy one". Then you have to get it drilled. The Pro Shops around me charge $70.00, plus tax, to drill a ball! Example, I've seen a Storm Hot Rod Pro Stock Pearl for sale on line for around $95.00 with free shipping. Good price. But now I have to get it drilled. I'm not "in" with the Pro Shop guys, so they're going to charge me $76.50 including tax to drill. That's $171.50. The Pro Shop sells the same ball for $159.99 plus tax, and that includes drilling. That's just one example. I know there are some good deals out there and you could save some money. But if you're an average Joe like myself and have to pay full price for drilling, it doesn't seem to me that you'll save a ton. I think I would rather support my local Pro Shop and buy local. Just my thoughts on the matter.

If your pro shop guy is charging you $70, you are getting hosed big time. My driller is "The Man" in this area and he only charges $30 to the general public and $20 to the "in" crowd as you call it. Sounds like your guy is doing his best to make people buy balls from him by charging 250% more than he should for drilling. I'm glad I dont have to use him.............

$70 to drill a blank ball is RIDICULOUS!! Go find a guy thats not trying to screw you over.  If you find a shop willing to charge you a reasonable blank drill charge of say $35, you will come out way ahead buying your stuff online..

He should also not be charging you tax on labor charges..

As far as the support your local pro shop thing, if thats the way you would rather go, then just do that. I see no problem either way, but as many balls as I like to try, I have to buy online, but I can still support my local shop with all the blank drills and plug and redrills I give him..

What triggerman said......

As for the shop like Hoser is talking about, I've seen this in the past where there is little or no competition, but not all pro shops do that. Just a few.

At one time as recent as a year ago, I bought my balls and had drilled on line from Doug Sterner because I had an incompetent driller and Doug was an accurate driller. His drilling fit like a glove. I now have an excellent-accurate driller, so I buy from my pro shop. Even though it costs me $20-$25 more than getting it done on line, I get more than that money back from my driller in benefits. My shop doesn't always charge for plugging and redrilling if I want to change a pitch or span plus other things the driller does free of cost for me.

I bought an AMF Triumph on-line (ebay), for $60. Shipping was $17.
Transaction was great.
Ball was suppoed to be 3" pin, it was around 4.5" (which I could live with).
UPS left the ball outside my door, in Chicago, besides it being 25 degrees...I was suprised the ball didn't disappear.

Driller/friend wanted $10 to layout and drill, I gave him $20. He's been drilling for me for about 25 years.

I brought it to the shop to be drilled yesterday.
There wasn't a drill sheet, or anything in the box. We didn't know if the core asymmetrical or symmetrical. Looked through some old BTM mags, couldn't find any info about the ball. We guessed it was symmetrical drilled it 5 x 4. Ball works great.

I drill quite a few balls, and send a lot of business to my friend's shop.
If I was an average bowler, buying a ball every year or two, I wouldn't buy on-line.

To be honest thats the norm now adays. I go to a proshop were the gentleman will charge only 35 dollars for a ball not bought from him.  Free if purchased from his proshop.  But every bowling center in the area the base price excluding grips and slugs are avg. around 50 to 65 dollars.  The internet is a good place to purchase equipment however you spend just that much getting the ball drilled.

so its a cache 22

By the time I paid shipping and had it punched at my local Pro Shop, slug, grips, I think I saved maybe $20.00.  Then I started thinking (scarey, I know).  The guy I give my money to online will spend that money somewhere else, outside of my geographical area.  Knowing that my Pro Shop owner/operators live in the area, I would rather give my money, including the extra $20, to them.  Not only is it an investment in my relationship with them, but they will take that money and buy other things that they need at local stores; furthering the enrichment of our community.  Kind of corny if you're young and dying to get out of town, I know.  But an important economic support factor if you have any time invested in your local community.

Left-Factor: Good response. I've also estimated that in the overall scheme of things, I'd save about (on average) $20.

For me, that's not worth it.

Around here theres no such thing as free drilling.

If you buy the ball from the shop, they charge about 30 dollars. Then if you want some finger inserts and a slug, thats another 20 for both.

If you dont buy it from them, they charge about 50 bucks, and the inserts and slug are both 20 bucks again.

So 70 bucks is what I pay for every ball to be drilled, then again, the balls at the pro shop are slightly more expensive, and I dont mind paying this much, because this is the cheapest pro shop in the area, and have the best driller as well.

Yeah, the pro shops are aware when you are bringing in an internet ball. They aren't kind to an "outsider"But like many of the posts I've read in this thread, once you have a few drilled up and maybe buy a few accessories..ETC.They tend to give you a break from that outrageous drill fee.Personally though, you can't put a price on a good ball driller, because the ball can only be as good as the guy who drills it.Internet is good if your looking for discontinued or soon to be discontinued equipment or you want "power buy" a certain piece you like. But for the latest stuff I'd say better to go to your pro shop...MY .02 worth

My pro shop guy loves to drill interent ball and has no issues doing so because he is a smart business man and not some old fashioned angry pro shop owner that is pissed that the online sellers are stealing his business..

To him, he is in the business to make money and if he makes $35 each to drill 10-15 internet balls a week, he is still doing ok. Sure he sells his share of new balls, shoes and bags but he also welcomes all the business he can get..

We have another shop in town where the guy is a total azz if you go into his place with an internet ball and thats why his business is down to where I doubt he will stay in business this entire year..
