Is Finger Grips Only Option
« on: February 01, 2013, 11:10:35 AM »
OK, I started on Beginners board, because wife and me is new to bowling. I got much good advice about ball choice for wife and me.  My wife, she got pretty ball called Scout.  I got used ball from friend called, Rhino Pro.  Very old ball, but that's OK, it's better than alley ball and not cost much.

But I follow advice about getting grips (I like to call them tubes) so that I can curve ball like other bowlers.  But even though they not hurt as much as when I used alley ball, my finger still hurt, near fingernail.  I ask for more help in Beginners board, but no answer.  So, I take tubes out and bowl with only fingers, but I don't like feeling and fingerholes are too wide for fingers.  Is there any other thing to use instead of tubes that make fingers not hurt?  My wife also, she break finger nail on one finger and blame me for getting tubes for her ball.  Need help, please.

If your fingers hurt near the fingernail, then it probably means the ball doesn't fit you correctly. Did you have the ball plugged and redrilled? Or are you just using it as you received it?

You really want to talk with your proshop. When you take the finger inserts out the holes remaining are not beveled to be smooth and used in the same manner as a house ball.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Wife's ball was new because it not cost so much.  My ball was cheap, but had to pay money to have holes filled and then drilled to match my fingers.  Finger tubes fit and feel nice at first but with more bowling, finger tips begin to hurt.  My wifes fingernail break inside tube but her finger not hurt, but she don't like broken nails.  Me, I want to bowl for fun and hurt finger nail take fun out of game.  Before, when I use alley ball, my finger hurt around knuckle, now finger hurt around finger nail inside tubes.  So, I take tubes out.  Now my finger nail don't hurt no more, but finger holes too big.  Any suggestions, please?  Other things available to use to take away finger pain instead of tubes?  Please?  Thank you much.

As kidlost mentioned, you need the help of a professional who can look at the situation in person. Talk to your local proshop. If they plugged and redrilled the ball for you, then they should be more than willing to correct it so your fingers doesn't hurt.

I would also recommend working with a local pro shop as nail pain from "tubes" as you are calling them, to me, indicates that you could be incorrect with your release in some manner or forming bad habits.

Many thank you for your advice.  I go speak with pro shop person to find out what to do.  I still keep my tubes that were in finger holes.  Maybe I try some bowling tape on fingers.  Do you think that may help?  I know I roll the ball like beginner, but I try very hard to curve ball like good players.  Maybe you right that I not using good bowling habits.  Maybe that will help, but not sure about wife.  Maybe she need to bite her nails because she not happy about breaking nail when using tubes.  She not have this problem before with alley ball that didn't have tubes.

Many thank you to all that make good suggesstions to me.  I glad I find this website.  People very nice and helpful.

Much as I hate to do this (not because the product is bad but because of the troll attacks that occurred) - this almost sounds like a Griips Glove opportunity.  Anyone who has experience want to comment?

I don't hear about this glove before.  How does a glove protect my finger and wifes broken nail?  I see some bowlers wearing gloves.  But I think their gloves don't cover bowling fingers.  I'm sorry about broken English.  Maybe I'm not clear.  It is my bowling finger that hurt and wifes bowling finger that has broken nail.  It is not fingers on outside of ball that hurt, but fingers in ball holes.  Again, sorry if I am not speaking clear English.  If this grip glove you talk about is like other bowlers gloves, maybe does not work for me and wife.  Maybe I google this glove and see about this.  Maybe I am wrong because I am new bowler.  Forgive me, please.  Thank you for your suggestions.

One thing might be that you are inserting your fingers too far into the grips/tubes. New bowlers to finger tip fits sometimes do this

For a finger tip fit you should not insert your fingers beyond the first joint so that your finger bends naturally. If you are inserting too far it wil force the back your fingers, the nail, into the back of the hole.

The another thing might be that the span, the distance between the thumb holes and finger holes, is too long and can cause this issue.

I checked google about that griips glove.  This glove look different than other gloves I see at bowling alley.  So, I asked pro shop person.  He not hear or know anything about this glove.  So he sorry he cannot help me with answer if this glove is gimmick.  I first think it is gimmick because I see no bowlers using and nobody know what is griips glove.  So, I check more and see the company that make griip glove charge big money.  So, maybe not a gimmick.  I don't know.  But bowlers in video make this glove look good and say that fingers not hurt anymore.  But, cost is too much for wife and me.  So I check some more and see some other places charge less.  Anybody have bad experience with buying things from bowlingball.com or bowling.com?  Maybe, wife and me, we try this griip glove thing, but not sure about buying from online pro shop store.  Any advice, please?  Thank you.

I have bought things from both websites, and both are great!  If your ball fits you correctly, you should not have to grip or squeeze or use muscle to get the ball to hook.  Try to relax your hand and swing and try not to make the ball hook and see if this helps the pain.  Being able to throw a big hook doesn't mean you are a good bowler.  Concentrate on form and accuracy and relaxed arm and grip first.

Thank you for advice about online pro shop stores. And, thank you for advice about how to swing the ball and not hold ball so tight to make it curve.  I see many good bowlers make curving the ball look easy and does not look like they hold ball so tight.  Maybe I trying too hard.  I try to relax, but sometimes hard to relax when I want to knock down many pins.  My wife, she very relaxed, except when finger nail got broken.  Now she thinking about other nail and not on hitting many pins.  She now also see this griips glove thing and look like she want to try.  Maybe I buy this griip glove from online pro shop store before wife break her other nail and blame me again for getting tubes for her ball.  I also see that the online pro shop store have section on bowling tips.  I start reading many good comments and stories here.  Good to see many places where I can get tips and learn.  My English not so good, but better than bowling, I think.  So, you bowlers give me smart advice and have much experience I think and other reading also help me, thank you, since me and wife do not have much money for many bowling lessons now.  So far so good.  Thank you all again.

I'm thinking your "tubes" are to tight for your fingertips. (baby powder might help too) There are different sizes and your Pro Shop should check that out. Have the tips of your fingers fitted with the different sizes and see what feels good (comfortable) to you and have them installed. The Pro shop should have you throw him/her a few balls (usually on the carpet to him) to see how they feel and whether they might be sticking or not. (keep your old ones if replaced) Usually "tubes" cost around $4. per each. AND, they are reversible for a different feel as well. Try both ends. Thinking this might be all you need, hopefully. Good bowling to you and the Mrs.

www.bowledsolutions.com/products.htm If you go this route, you'll need to have the inserts removed and probably have the ball (fingers) re-drilled larger as well.

Just wondering Hector, but do you throw the ball with out putting your thumb in? Also, when you put your fingers in the ball when it had the tubes do you put in your fingers as far as they will go or do you just put the tips of your fingers in? If you are putting your fingers in as far as you can then try Backing them out to the first nuckle. I think you may just need some coaching, shouldn't be hurting like this. Don't worry about the griips glove just yet, its real, but I think it may be the wrong dirrection for you.
