ever heard of a house doing this?
« on: August 22, 2007, 11:20:58 PM »
Ok here is the story.  Our house put brand new pins in about 2 weeks ago.  As is the norm the pins slide a good bit and it causes lots of out of range calls.  So thier solution is to put on the pin decks a "light" coating of Tide laundry detergent the powder type.  What they dont think about is during the summer of open play nobody notices but last night was the first week of our men's league and the shot went away in less than 5 frames.  Every time a ball crosses the pin deck it picks up the detergent and brings that out on the lane the next time it is thrown.  By the time the night ended most were using thier spare balls and I was lofting my Cobalt Bomb Pearl over the gutter cap all the way out to the 5 board and still going high.  High set for the night on my pair was 602.  Keep in mind thats 10 guys who the lowest average was 195 and the high was 224.  What can be done about this?

Nobody should have threw a ball down the lanes till they cleaned it off.
I'm sure that violated some kind of USBC rule.

Somebody didn't want to go to the trouble of properly cleaning the pin decks.
or changing to a lane conditioner that wouldnt carry down so much.

That's asinine!  Have the center resurface the whole league's equipment at their expense...

At my centre we use Blue Thunder too stop the OOR's. It leaves a little bit of white film on the pin decks and it really reduces OOR's and it does not get on the bowling ball itself. No one has ever compained or anything and it saves me from doing more work

I don't buy this.....sorry

I was a mechanic for years and we used detergent to keep OOR's down.  We would put it in water and spray a small amount on each pin deck.  As it dries it leaves a small film that keeps the pins from sliding.

I don't see how they put enough "detergent" down to make the oil go away on the lanes, and how after a few balls and pins bouncing around, the detergent wasn't already gone.

Honestly I don't buy your whole story, I can believe that they changed the shot, and that it didn't hold up very well.  However putting powder detergent on the pin decks sounds like league bowlers misunderstanding something and making it into a rumor.

I worked as a mechanic a long long time ago, and I never heard of the detergent method, we used to use a bleach formula.

It just amazed me when people using something like that to fix a problem, I remember they have some product specifically to spray on the pin deck to avoid sliding pins, all they need to do is call the manufacturer and they have lots of solutions.  Why not put some sand paper on the deck
