Is it illegal
« on: July 10, 2011, 12:20:34 PM »
We bowl on a sanction double league on Sunday. There's a team decide to request the lane guy not to oil their pair and trying to be sneaky on it. But they got caught. Is it legal to do some action like this?

Definitely not.  Even with my summer league, if I go to throw a practice game or two before the league starts, the house does not allow me to throw the practice games on the league pair that will be used.

Likely not since the lanes will be equal for both teams bowling on it. USBC post their rules on the site and would be your best place to check. If there is a rule against it their is likely no course of action to be taken for doing such a thing.

I agree with Kidlost. Unless your league rules prohibit such it's probably legal. Having said that, most leagues should want a level playing field for all teams, since there are usually awards based on performance for the league.
If one or two teams have an unfair advantage then the rest of the league should create or amend rules prohibiting that type of thing.

The league rules are where you should address that type of issue.

Probably not technically illegal for the reason kidlost2000 mentioned, but you might want to check to be sure.  Even so, if I knew I loved the lanes as they were, I might have an advantage over the other team even though we'd be bowling on the same pair.  I guess they bowled on it right before league and scored really well, so they didn't want it changed?  If that's so, it's possibly immoral not only for league awards, but also for brackets and side pots.  If I knew I'd shoot 250+ on the pair as it was, I'd probably have an advantage over most of the rest of the league.

I don't think he is talking about bowling on the lanes before league, he is talking about the house on purpose not oiling the pair of lanes each week that this particular team is on, at request of the team.   Their bowling on the left over oil conditions from the day or days before the league, while the rest of the teams in the league are bowling on the fresh house shot.

If I were you and the rest of the league, I would send the house a message and quit the league.  If the house is helping teams to win a league, its bad morally and bad for business.  Show them just how bad it hurts in their profits.

It is illegal to not oil a pair of lanes in league play.  USBC rules indicate that there must be a minimum of 3 units of oil on each board.  If there are 3 units still on there from before then you would be ok.

Is it illegal to not oil a pair of lanes for league while oiling the others? No. Just look at the USBC. How many stories have we heard where someone on Doubles and Singles had to follow behind another shift and had the leftovers, while a few pairs down someone was on the fresh because that pair was not used the previous shift? So in general, not oiling a pair while others bowl on fresh is ok and not a problem.

However, others are correct when stating this is ethically wrong to not oil a pair on purpose at the request of the team. Nobody at the USBCs requested their pair to not to be oiled or to be fresh, you have no choice.

Cory867,

The 3 unit rule applies only if you use oil.  There is nothing illegal about not oiling, in fact, it is proably the most legal, but unplayable condition.

Here is something for you right out of USBC Rules:

Chapter 7: Equipment Specifications and Certifications

Do lanes have to be dressed prior to every league?

No. Every bowling center is inspected annually for a compliant lane condition. USBC specifications dictate that when the lanes are dressed, a minimum of three units from edge board to edge board be used for the length of the pattern. As long as this is done when the lanes are initially dressed, they are compliant.

Based on USBC rules...they did nothing illegal. I don't agree with it. But it is okay.

Doesn't seem to be anything illegal but probably unethical. If enough league members bring this to the attention to the bowling alley management it probably won't happen again.

There actually was a house near me that lost their USBC sanction for a year for not properly oiling and maintaining the lanes before league play.  Then there was the case where there were 9 people throwing an 800+ series  in a weeks time at the same house.  It went from 1 of the easiest places to play to one where there is severe over/under.

The key is "not properly maintaining".  My guess is they were maintaining the lanes but creating a shot by not putting at least three units in places that would create a guide to the pocket.  In other words they were probably creating a wall shot.

Easy way to combat this: Vote in a blind draw for pairs each week. That will nip that crap in the bud. Only kicker is to do it once the league starts requires 100% which your unethical team will probably be against. But when you meet to decide the rules again next summer, it only takes 51% to become rule.
