Thoughts on "ESPN's bowling night"
« on: April 28, 2005, 12:08:43 PM »
I saw an episode this afternoon.

Has anyone considered that this could be the future of bowling?

Lets face it, todays society is considered the "Hip-hop society". The majority of these athletes, or participants if you will, are black. The vast majority of bowlers are white. Is that an issue that we have all failed to ignore? Do we need to recruit other "races" to participate in bowling?

Kids today, black, white, whatever listen to hip-hop and watch MTV. They wear their clothes baggy and act like rap stars and such. Bowling needs to appeal to this demographic to recruit more bowlers. I worked at a center during cosmic bowling. We had FAR more of the "hip-hop soceity" participants during cosmic than we ever have during open play.

Even if league bowling becomes all cosmic bowling, we would have more participation. I think the public view of bowling needs to change. If the majority of leagues were cosmic and only one "normal" league, would this help recruit new bowlers? Maybe, just maybe, Espn is on to something here.

I love this show. They make me look like a PBA pro!!! If anyone thinks that ESPN has made a decision to focus on Black athletes, you're nuts. If so where is Jerome Bettis and his 12-300 games. If you still think this is racially motivated..THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT.

The focus of the topic was suppose to be on if bowling was going in the direction of hip hop. Then everyone jumped in with ignorant & racist comments. I guess much doesnt change over the years. Klugh you didnt offend me.

the people on the show don't exemplify what it means to be hip hop so In my opinion the show has nothing to do with the fact that bowling is going hip hop. You people need to get out more.

this has nothing to do with where bowling is going, these are just excellent atheletes we like to see not be the best at a sport. It doesent matter race, gender, or what type of music, and even if it soon happens to be all bowlers where those type of clothes what is the big deal, nothing wrong, doesnt mean they wont be able to play, but it isnt like this gig is couraging kids to take up bowling, just rather to see their favorite athelete without the gear on, and in a different world.

From what I get out of this is a lot of people taking the whole post wrong. What Agroves was trying to ask if trying to appeal to the younger "hip hop" generation and have more cosmic leagues would start to get more people in the door. Yeah he did say that MOST of the athletes are black that are on there. We all know that is true that MOST pro athlete are black. I don't think he inteded to make anyone mad at all. While it is true that all kids don't listen to hip hop or rap so in a way that is a bad stereotype to put on kids. For those of you that jumped in and got mad for what he sad step back and re read everything. If you still don't understand it read it again. He meant nothing by his comments at all. Just asking a simple question. Do I think it could work by doing more cosmic or rock and bowl leagues to get people in the door? The answer is yes I do and from there hopefully convert them into a serious bowler and into regular leagues. If you don't like what I have just said oh well. Just defending someone that has had a lot of good points in here from the past.

I didnt get offended by Agroves comments. It was by some of the other immature idiots. Some of the same ones who get down Wicked's back.
