Years ago, with polyester (yellow dot, etc) technology, it was skid, roll, hook. With new technology it has changed to skid, hook, roll.
I didn't bowl from mid 1984 (black hammer era) till mid 1995 (early reactive), so I don't know quite when it changed.

Skid Roll Hook

Ball has to get friction before it can hook.

It is SKID HOOK ROLL.

Roll part is key for carry. You want the ball to roll through the pins.

It is skid, hook, roll--exactly as described by king of the mill.

As Jerry Francomano said - the optimum time for the ball to hit the pins is EXACTLY when it uses up ALL it's energy.
If it hits the pins with too much energy, corner pins.
If it hits the pins after it's all used up, weak corner pins.

We've only covered this about a gazillion times <sigh>.  It's about physics, not opinions:

Brian Purcel, formerly of Ebonite:

"Mass Bias changes the shape of the breakpoint. By shape I mean the amount of time it takes the ball to go into a forward roll. Forward roll occurs when the ball loses axis rotation (side roll). When a ball achieves forward roll, it has ceased hooking and now is rolling in a linear direction. Promoting a quicker forward roll would be beneficial in heavier oil conditions, promoting a slower transition to forward roll would be beneficial in lighter oil conditions."

Skid, hook, roll.  Please memorize.  Thank you, and have a nice day.

Ive read in several places, that it was skid roll hook.

Think about it with drag racing.

The tires first skid, now, do the tires go, then get friction??? No, it gets friction first before it can go anywhere.

I've read in several places that the Earth is flat.  You must consider your sources. Trust me, Brian Purcel and king of the mill know what they are talking about.  Some others, ummmm... don't.

I don't know what any of you guys are thinking. Here is how it goes:

Release-skid- curse- hook- stomp foot-roll-place hands on head-curse again-repeat.

There you have it.

Bowling is without a doubt the dumbest, most pointless, most idiotic excuse for a game that has ever been invented. So, what time are we bowling tomorrow?

The ball roll evolution goes
Skid.....roll....hook....hook out....roll out

It skids on the oil, and as it encounters more friction it rolls, where it then shortly after hooks (if thrown to do so), then its hooking process stops, and the rotational axis levels off (not completely) as the ball enters the pocket area (if thrown perfectly) at the point known as the hook-out point (not hooking, but not roll out)...THEN if the hook out occurs too early the ball's rolling axis becomes perfectly flat, and you have roll out...

I agree.

I have thrown a ball that went straight, then it started to roll, then it slightly hooked on the backend. However it rolled first before it hooked. Maybe this depends on your release. However, I do see what your saying. But i agree with bob7 said.
