Is it time to reduce the number of events on the PBA Tour?
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:41:01 AM »
Since money is the issue. If most of these guys can't make a living at this then its time to step back and let them have jobs. They can go to tournaments that are strategically placed through out the year. Instead of every week.

Would it be in the best interest of the PBA to cut down. Maybe there should be one event for every oil pattern out there (That would be 11 events. 12 if you count the Dydo Cup in Japan).

Up the entry fees for each event.

Open the regular tournaments up to more bowlers (No Exemption).

Points achieved are only used in majors. The bowlers with highest points in
previous year are guaranteed spots in major events.

Maybe there needs to be more international stops other than Japan.

I am thinking create less events but increase the prize fund. Make it worth while for the bowlers to go and win some money, instead of having all these events and watering down the prize money.

Just an idea.

Even still theres no reason that every exempt player should definately cash every week.

I would agree with this. Cut down the number of events, up the entry fee, and make it worthwhile for guys to go out and bowl. If you really wanted to make a living, you could do it in High Rollers and amateur tourneys with 10k first place prizes and stuff like that. Everybody in the Round of 64 makes money, and I find that stupid. With only 64 players, you shouldn't cash until at least the round of 16.

1. Put this in the PBA forum.

2. Talk sense, not nonsense. The PBA is in business to make money, not to provide bowlers with an income. If they make money, the PBA does not give a crap, one way or the other. It is a corporation, no more, no less. Any corporation could care less about whether or not its employess earn a living wage or not. This is the current real life; get used to it or go live on welfare or a trailer park in Nebraska or Idaho or Kentucky Or New Jersey.

Get more and better sponsors.  Have ESPN perceive that the sport can make money for them and not charge broadcast fee!

Entry fees make up very little of the prize fund - prize fund comes from the host center and sponsors as well.

Not really a factor.  That's what the PTQ is about.  Those "non-exempt" bowlers pay to play and some of the money goes into the tournament itself.  At least, I think that's the way it works.

There's something to be said about the open format of older tournaments, however.

Nothing wrong with trailer parks. I grew up in one and lived in another one for some years after I got married. In fact, even my RV has more amenities than some folks houses! And when we travel, we often stay in what some folks would call trailer parks.

If "all" bowlers can compete is it really a "professional" bowlers tour?

Shouldn't you have to prove that you belong on that stage?
