Is less oil being put out?
« on: November 17, 2015, 03:45:26 PM »
Over the last year, I have noticed a change here in my area (Southern California).  I mostly bowl at AMF or Brunswick brand bowling centers, and it just seems there is so much more friction than in the past.  I am not sure if this is intentional, or possibly lane surfaces wearing, and just not holding oil as well as in the past.  Over the years in practice, if I got out a weak reactive or urethane a 200 would be a good score for me, now, 250's with my urethane Natural Pearl are not uncommon, and if I try to use medium strength equipment, I'm playing 4th arrow, and frustrated by the lack of hold in the pattern.  I've asked the center managers, and they aren't aware of a policy from corporate.  Haven't had the chance to speak with the lane men about it yet.  Wondering if anyone else is dealing with this issue over various houses.

Hasn't been much oil outside second arrow for years in most houses.  However a lot of older anvil lane and HPL houses are certainly worn badly in the heads.  I am bowling in a 16 year old anvil lane house, and I can only play outside 10 with a really tame ball for about 1 game.  Next move is about 7 and 2 left playing lots of loft and out angle with a strong pearl

I see the same B.S. where I bowl.  We wonder why proshops go out of business...the bowling alley's league shots need to be current with the level of equipment coming out. I wanna know why it's not beef stew out there requiring everybody throwing gurus and hyper cells!!
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

I've noticed the same thing in our center. Way more friction in the head area. Last year I had to use my Primal Rage most nights. This year I've used it twice and most nights have had to use my 12 year old Columbia TI-Pearl Messenger. Our lanes are 8 year old synthetics, so definitely not too worn.

I used to work in a Workshop part-time while going to school.  I made the same argument to the center manager until I was blue in the face.  He just couldn't understand why no one bought new equipment (blue hammers and turbo Pearl urethane were the standard).  I suggested he put out a fair, but higher volume shot...both to better protect the lanes and to give people at least a shot at scoring....and to boost proshop sales.  Absolutely refused because he could throw his ball up the ten board and it would (and I quote) "walk right into the pocket.".

While it is impossible to know what an individual centers situation is overall there is much more oil being put out today than in the past.

The balls that come out are stronger and stronger and absorb more lane condition than before. A medium ball today was a strong ball of 10 years ago.

Between the walled up shots with minimal oil being put outside of 10 and the uber strong balls sucking up all the oil you are going to end up with a wet dry shot.

I will also say there is an equal number of bowlers at your center that would complain there is too much conditioner on the lanes.

So as a proprietor do you cater to the 20% who are constantly buying the new super hooker pill? The 20% who feel the lanes are too slick? The 60% who think things are just fine?

That's generally the 80% who buy alcohol and food while bowling. They win.  :)

I have been told by the proprietor at the local center that more oil causes problems during open bowling sessions with the machines not be able to pick up the hard house balls. Most open bowlers don't pay attention to the ball return and they keep throwing ball after ball until there is a mess of balls down in the pit. That is his reason.

Weather has changed here in Southern Utah. I've gone from throwing my Storm Ride and it almost being too much ball to not even taking it out of the bag now

Lane oil cost 50$ a gallon ,you do that math !!

One gallon equals 3785 mL.  Lets assume a center puts out 25% less oil than a normal THS like Stone Street from Kegel.  Stone Street uses 23.15 mL, so 25% less would be 17.36 mL.  Difference being 5.79 mL.  So one additional gallon will allow a proprietor to oil 653 lanes with "normal" oiling than the "cheapskate" way.  That is an additional 7.6 cents a lane extra.

Now, some proprietors will justify oiling less by the costs associated.  Most likely, they are misinformed of the actual costs.  My numbers may be generic (and I didn't verify the $50 a gallon value), but the main takeaway is it doesn't cost much more.

My belief is the shot is the way it is because the each center has dictated their conditions based on the vocal minority.
