Entry Angle - The Imaginary Line
« on: January 01, 2004, 07:35:50 AM »
If you were to draw "the best entry angle" line from the pocket to the gutter how far down the lane would the line end at the gutter?

Are you asking when the ball will start the breakpoint?? If so, usually around 40 feet.

There was an article about this last year in the ABC mag.

I think that they were saying it was 6 degrees. I forget the specifics, but it was a VERY in depth article.

We had quite a few long discussions here about the articles & the merits of it. Subjects such as rev rate and other variables were tossed around here as well.

Here's a couple of the threads I've found here:

The perfect entry angle is 6º. Reffer to **MY SITE** http://csbowling.vze.com/clinicperfectstrike.shtml

I believe there is an article on the Columbia 300 web site
about what angle is needed for the perfect strike. I don't
remember the exact angle but the article said that when the
ball entered at this angle you would strike nearly 100% of
the time. It said that any variation, no matter how, small
would lower the percentage.

Okay, its 6 degrees. Now where would the ball be when it hits the pocket. I mean into relation from the right side in inches. (Would assume its pretty close to the middle of the 1 and 3 pin or would it be closer towards the 1 pin.

I think the ball has to hit the 1 pin first?

I am trying to draw a diagram for someone and show them what the perfect hit is.
As soon as I get this together, I will try to put it on a web page.

Ok 6* is the perfect angle.  What is the starting point to get this 6*?  I would think that it would be the head pin; by taking a strait line back to the foul line and intersecting the middle of the head pin. Am I right with this thinking?  All I know is that I run 30*-45* with my thinking.

Yes, ball hits the head pin first..
For a righty, ball path is 1-3-5-9..

Please check all the links given above by other posters. You could find pretty much useful information about what you are asking for..

Strike point is on 17th board (with a proper angle which is stated as 6 degrees. It is correct but I may add that this proper angle may vary between 4 to 7 degrees according to the lane condition, rev rate, speed, axis rotation and axis tilt of a bowler)
This 17th board is exactly 2 - 1/2 inches off the center of the head pin. Head pin is centered on 20th board and pin is 4 boards wide. Make your own calculation

See this site and gives the postion and entry through the pins of the bowling ball.  Must see.

Full site is http://mrcla.com/bowling/bowling-pres/

Then we have this.

Did you know there is a "Perfect Strike?" Studies done by the ABC proved there is such thing!

„X   In a strike hit, especially a perfect strike, the ball only hits 4 pins - 1, 3, 5 and 9.
„X   The ball must hit the head pin precisely at the center line of the 1, 2, 4, 7 pin row.
„X   The ball must also strike the 3 pin precisely on the center of the row.
„X   The ball then continues through the rack to hit the 5 pin at the center of the 5-8 combination.
„X   The ball must then hit the 9 pin.

Notice that the Percentage of Strikes reaches 100% when the ball enters the pocket on the 17th or 18 board. That should be everyone's goal.

Well I had some free time and created a Full Size Bowling Lane (within 1000 inch accuracy) on a Program (VISIO). My virtual lane is only two dimensional but it has given a unique visual aid. This lane I created is 41.5 Inches across.

6 Degree Entry Angle Line: This line starts at the gutter at 45 feet 7 inch line to 2.5 inches right from the center of the head pin at 60 feet.
At 50 feet this line intersects just a little past the 5th board.
At 55 feet this line intersects just a little past the 11th board.

8 Degree Entry Angle Line: Line starts at the gutter at 49 feet 2.25 inch line.
At 50 feet this line intersects a little past the 1 board.
At 55 feet this line intersects a little past the 9th board.

4 Degree Entry Angle Line: Line starts at the gutter at 38 feet 2.75 inch line.
At 40 feet this line intersects a little past the 1 board.
At 45 feet this line intersects a little past the 5th board.
At 50 feet this line intersects a little past the 9th board.
At 55 feet this line intersects a little past the 13th board.

Just looking at this. The first question that came to mind was "Are the newer balls of today producing too high of entry angles?"

Now I know these are straight lines and a ball would move in an arching motion. Please someone correct me, I would assume that as the ball moves to the pocket after the break point the arching of the ball decreases as it would be losing energy when it hits dry.
