Playing deep inside next to the ball return
« on: February 16, 2005, 02:10:09 PM »
Just wondering what everyone does to help them. My A game is definitely playing inside...I can play as deep as it takes. But it tends to get hard when I am on the right lane right next to the ball return, especially at my house where the new Brunswick ball returns are way up on the lane. I am just wondering what others do to help them?

I never have to do this, as I'm more of a power stroker, but some people float to the left as they walk so that they can get farther left.

I hate playing deep inside but one of my leagues is a burnt out 2nd shift following a 5-man league. I've tried both approaches above and while I don't lose ball speed standing front of the return, it is far less natural than using the same approach and drifting / floating left as suggested. If you have &$&#, you can stand on the left side of the return and take your approach diagonally toward you point of release.

Never having alot of ball speed to begin with, I have learned to play in front of the ball return.  Just takes practice.  Cut my approach down to four short steps.

I want to learn how to do 3 steps, but I just can't get the timing down correctly.

I like when the shot is in this deep, most people can't/won't go that far left.

I have a teammate who will keep his approach the same length, but takes a large sidestep around the return to get deep enough on dry lanes.  He has practiced it enough he has minimal timing issues with it now.  We like to joke around with him and his ball return dancing.  The best looks come at college tournaments when he busts out the dancing shoes.

I heard it is against the ABC, well now USBC rules to stand on another lane for a shot. True or not?

Same for me. Playing deep is my specialty! But when I get so deep I'm humping the ball return, (and I dont have a choice to switch balls) I just take a nice big side step on my 2nd step. (I stand at the 2nd set of dots on the approach, so I'm almost at the end of the return anyways) But if it is really that bad that I'm that far over I throw plastic. (I'm a lucky one, I get enough on the ball to carry with plastic)

Not true, unless it's a brand new rule.  As long as you release the ball on the correct lane, it's not a problem.

I know this is kind of like a Little Leaguer telling Barry Bonds how to hit a baseball, but here goes anyway...

I bowl at a center that has long ball returns, so that when the shot gets deep enough to where I have to get in front, I only have room for three steps (I usually take five steps).  The way that I worked out the timing was to take my first two steps "in place," but move the ball as if I were taking two full-size steps.  That way, the cadence remains the same irrespective of the actual length of my approach.

One other piece of advice for fried conditions.
