Is this cheating? If so what do I do?
« on: April 04, 2017, 07:10:23 AM »
Hello bowling Family,
I am a new bowler and I am in my first official league. Here is the story:
Yesterday I came to the lanes early for league. I noticed that one of the players was also there early(it's a two man team). So I noticed him using sand paper on one of his balls. Fast forward to practice time for league. I see him using the ball and throwing it down 10. I did not practice I was just watching what he was doing( I throw across lane. I stand on 35 or 37). The guy with the ball sand paper throws on the 15, My partner throws on the 10 and his partner throws between 10 and 15. My partner kept coming to me and saying my ball not acting right (his ball would just go straight left). The guy asked me why do I stand so far over, and I told him that I am a new bowler and I play for fun( that was partially true but his team was going for first place which is a 1,600 pay out per person). We did end up winning 7-2 which knocked them out of the running for the money and they was highly mad at the end. Is it cheating in bowling to use regular sandpaper on the ball? To me it looked like he was trying to mess up our lines? or is it cheaper to use sand paper and the grits are the same some how?

Cheating, no. Blowing up an area on purpose, yes.

No, it is not cheating. You can alter the surface of a bowling ball before scoring starts in a league or tournament. Once competition has started, only approved ball cleaners can be used. Sand paper has different grits than sanding pads that pro shops use to change the surface. Some people like to try and set up the lane to make it easier to score by breaking down a certain part of the lane to create a hook spot. Or, sometimes they will try to make it harder for an opponent by taking them out of their comfort zone. For example, if a person is used to throwing around 10 at the arrows, then the opponent could throw a sanded ball down 10 to burn up that line. With 10 minutes of practice it would be hard to alter the lanes with a 4 or 5 person team. With doubles, they might be able to change it enough to create a difference.

No it's not cheating to use paper.

Yes paper is cheaper. Sandpaper was used for years before abralon came along and still is along with other things like scotchbrites.

and the grits are the same some how?

The big difference between paper and abralon is just what grit scale they use.

Most Sandpaper uses the US Ansi/Cami scale to list the grits, Abralon uses the European FEPA P-scale which just uses a tighter tolerance for  grits.

So if want to use sandpaper you just got to convert P-scale to Ansi/Cami scale.

Example: A 4000 grit abralon would be 1500 grit Ansi/Cami paper. See my conversion here for more:

Also they now have paper that uses the FEPA P-scale if you can find it.

Eh. Don't they oil the lanes over there before matches and such?!
Here we have matches at 17:30 and 19:30 (these matches suck, because they don't oil the lanes again then), but they do oil before the first set of matches.
The team I play on sometimes do play at the first set of matches. No idea why they've decided that some of us has to bowl at 19:30, it's damn annoying actually. It's the leaders in the league here who decide it, and I bet it's the shits who have the most voice here who don't want some of us to bowl at the same time as them.
It's not the alley owners who decide it, they would prefer that everyone play at the same time so that the clerks there don't have to work over time.
Sometimes we have to wait until 20:00, and that's when we will most likely be there until after the alley actually closes.

Anyway, enough ranting :P
They should oil the lanes and such before new matches.
Most used:
Motiv Venom Shock (14)
DV8 Grudge Hybrid (14)
Hammer Scandal (14)
DV8 Freakshow (14)

Sometimes.
C300 Swerve (14)
Motiv Jackal LE (14)

Retired:
Roto Grip Sinister (13)
Motiv Jackal (14)

Given to a no-thumber in the club:
Brunswick T-zone (13)

Might stick with Motiv from now on.
