I know that in a sanctioned tournament you cannot alter the coverstock of the ball in anyway once you start. But my question is, I use tape in my thumb hole and I've been having issues where when I pull the tape out, it's leaving the sticky crap behind it. The only way I can clean the ball at home is by using like acetone on a rag or something to clean it out.
Now, if I'm in a tournament and I pull out the tape and have the sticky stuff left, can I go to my bag and put acetone on a towel and clean out the thumb hole? or is that illegal? I would not be touching the cover at all, just a towel in the thumbhole.
Thanks

You're allowed to clean your ball at any time. You cannot alter it by sanding it. You'll have to check if acetone is an approved cleaner.

You are allowed to clean inside your finger or thumb holes with acetone, even under a situation you described. You are NOT allowed to use acetone at ANY time on the outside of the ball as it alters the surface.
If you do use acetone to clean the thumbhole during competition you need to make sure you do not get any on the outside of the ball or look like you are. Don't use the acetone towel to wipe the ball, etc.

Acetone is not legal to use on the ball "surface" at anytime. I would find another option to avoid the debate and possible conflict. You could also give USBC a call and they should let you know the definate "yes" or "no" on it.
They are pretty easy to get a hold of and willing to help. That is what we pay our dues for, so use it.

Rubbing alcohol, which is legal at all times, gets tape residue out with a little bit of elbow (or finger?) grease.

I keep a 4 oz. bottle of "Goo Gone" in my bag since the Columbia Tape Residue Removers were discontinued.
Is anyone aware if another company has a similar product?

They apparently had a problem with them drying out. One of our distributors said they have a bunch of them that were unopened, but dried out.
I also saw them online, but I'm leary of buying them only to find out they've gone bad.

Goo Gone will do the job. I wipe the residue left after using the GG out with rubbing alcohol. -- JohnP

You can also go to your local drugstore and get the small alchohol prep pads they are virtually the same thing.

I have had some success with a little elbow grease and Valentino's Remedy RX getting tape residue off and it is approved for use during competition by the USBC.
