I was subbing in a league against another team. This other team was cleaning their bowling equipment with Renew-it if their ball didnt strike. Not the whole team but 4 of the 5 members. The league president is on this team and said its legal. I know you can use alcohol and a polishing machine during league play but is Renew-it ok?

It is legal during competition. Here is a link the the ABC website:

You'll probably have to copy and past it in your browser, but Renew-It is on the list of approved cleaners to use during competition.

According to the link Gene posted, it sure looks like you can clean the ball with neo-tac (and certain other products) while bowling. Thanks for the link Gene.

We were talking about Renew-it at the shop the other day and there are many ways to apply it that changes the characteristics of the product. You can combine it with other products to produce certain effects. Using it cold does one thing where how I use it does another. I like to heat it a little on the spinner by adding water. Mixing it with hook-it or control-it does something else. It works. I guess the thing is knowing what it will do when you apply it.

Reading that list, am I too assume that using Acetone to clean belt marks off a ball is illegal at all times??? That hardly seems right. If you clean your ball with acetone and then resurface it back to it's original specs, why should that be illegal? I understand soaking it in MEK. but this isn't the same.

Acetone is illegal to apply during competition.(pretty sure on that)
Also, Acetone, with excesive application, will soften the coverstock. (so tests say)

Acetone is illegal at any time, even though most pro shops use it to smooth down inserts to be even with the ball.
