Reaction and Emotion
« on: September 28, 2004, 09:03:00 AM »
Let's say you just rolled a strike, made a spare or missed.  What kind of reaction do you have??? Subtle?  Intense?  PLeasant?  Annoying?

How long do you hold onto that reaction???

I know my answer, just curious to what all you have to say!!!!!

Well it really depends. If Im just bowling league or something not serious (to me that is) if I strike, its just a "yay" kinda thing, if I miss a spare its just a "crap, gotta pick up the pace here", if I pick up a spare its just a "good shot". Now under pressure, say a tourney, if I strike, its like "YEA!" *pumps fist in air*, if I miss a spare its like "SH1T!! I GOTTA PICK UP THE PACE OR IM DONE!", if I make a spare its a "good job! you got this man, you got ur spares today keep it up!". Remember though, this is all in my head, most of the time all anyone else would see is maybe me drop my head on a miss, or just a subtle fist pump to myself. And as for how long I hold on to an emotion or reaction to something, usually its no more then a few minutes, most likely out of my head by the next shot.

I try to keep my reactions to a  minimum.  It's easier to stay focused on each shot if I don't have a strong reaction.  Most of my reaction are reflected in my expressions: smile, frown, disgusted look etc.

I'd have to say that i definetely love strikes. i usually don't go more than one frame without striking. ive been bowling 6 months and i average 190 and have a high game of 265 which i have rolled 5 times. my strike reaction is very subtle but inside i am cheering for myself. usually when i miss a spare or dont strike i try to just shake it off and move on. since i am very consistent now i have a great ball reaction that i can control easily. im hoping for the 300

I have a Ray Lewis mentality............ speaks for itself doesn't it?

I am my team's leader.  I fire them up, even if it's just a made spare.  IF someone misses, I tell them we need to get it going.

And i have the occasional "YEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH, LET'S GO, WOOO, WOO YEAAAAHHHH!!!"

Ray Lewis.  'Nuff said.

I guess it is all the level you are at.

At upper levels of bowling why would you have a reaction to making a normal spare or a strike?

You should make your spares. If I would pick up a big split I’ll feel a sense of accomplishment for a moment.

If I miss a spare I’m upset with myself for a moment and then move on. Staying frustrated only increases the odds of throwing another bad shot the next frame.

If I throw a strike, I’m generally analyzing the shot more than anything. I’m trying to determine if I need to make any adjustments the next time on the lane or why the ball didn’t strike. If the strike was for an honor score or to win a match I might give it a small fist pump.

If I make a good shot, strike or spare, then I let out a small smile as i leave the approach, but if I miss an easy spare then its a different story, I get in a grump, so annoyed with myself, I don't lash out, just keep it all inside, and try harder each shot after, but as I try harder sometimes I start missing more and more, its only when I take a defeatist attitude I start hitting the pins again.

Pinbuster I have to disagree with your opening statement, unless your a robot you will have some sort of reaction/emotion regardless of your level of experience.

If you roll your shot and stayed committed to your mark, ball speed, and follow through and carried all ten pins.  You'll feel something maybe not a super joyous feeling if your a newbie, but maybe something along the lines of confidence boost if your a little bit more experinced.  Knowing you brought it all to the line, gave it your all and got great results from it.

This is purely from of mental standpoint.
