Carry down

Anyone have any ideas of how to combat carry down that I might have overlooked? I have been bowling very good for the last eight weeks. Sunday I shot 225, 163, and 227. The 163 was really unusual for me. It was a huge carry down issue. My usual shot was producing light hits with no carry, when the first game, over the same shot, I was smashing the pocket. I tried to tweak it with speed control and wound up with four splits in the game. Looking back in hindsight, I should have just kept throwing the same shot and making spares until the carry down dried up. I went right back at it in the third game and the carry down was gone. What do you do when you face a carry down situation????

Did you try a ball change after doing hand/mark adjustments?

No I did not try a ball change, although I thought of it. I was using aggressive equipment as it was. I have something equally as aggressive in my locker. I did not think using my non-aggressive equipment would be a good move. An equipment change might have worked. It might have just changed the angle or distance enough.

Move feet and target further outside.
One usually goes around the carrydown,
... unless you want to change balls and move inside, which means possibly fooling around with finding the new oil line. You can lose the same amount of frames or more, as you learned by just staying there, with your old target and breakpoint.

Agree with the move out. If its like this area a move out could mean twice as much dry---but that would allow you to throw a weaker ball while still generating the same angle.

I agree with Charlest, usually the best move is to tighten up the line, moving further outside to get around the carrydown you faced. My bowling coach has also helped me with a lower/longer release when playing down and in, keeping the same ball I was using before but waiting an extra couple of inches before rotating through the ball with my fingers. It's almost like looking an extra foot with my eyes down the lane, helps retain the ball's energy to get through the carrydown and still have enough to make the turn with power for the pins.

Thank you Charlest. I will put that one in the back of my head for future use. Step further right, shoot further right, go around the carrydown, with less aggressive equipment. The question then would be, how do I know when the carry down has dried up, so that I can move back to my original shot? (If I need to!)

Depending on the number of people playing that line, carrydown usually can last about 8 to 10 frames. I've found that you can return usually in the 3rd game back to that same line, but often have to use less aggressive equipment when you do return to that area...
