Secretary Fees
« on: August 16, 2007, 11:10:15 PM »
I wanted to know if anyone could tell me what they pay the league secretary for leagues. How many teams in the league and so forth. I am just trying to see what other secretary's are being paid....too much...not enough... please add your thoughts and comments. This is for winter leagues and no treasurer. Thanks.

We have a 16 team league, 5 man teams, bowling is $10 per week/bowler and we pay $600 for the league season.

34 teams, and the secretary/treasurer gets .45 per bowler per night.  There's also a once-per-season $12.00 per team "expense money" fee that goes to buy paper and ink and all the office essentials that go with being secretary.

The secretary/treasurer gets $3,085.50 per year for the position.  I think my league wins

Our former secretary was getting .50 per person a night. But after we looked at it we dismissed him.

we have about 40 bowlers and bowl 33 weeks.

What does that mean?  "...after we looked at it..."?  Did you decide he wasn't doing his job properly?  Making mistakes and refusing to correct them?  Lax on awards?  Ran off with your money?

It varies around here.  Some of the senior leagues are paying about .50/bowler/week for secretary/treasurer duties.  But a majority of the mixed leagues are up to $1.00 - $1.25/bowler/week.

I don't mind paying a good secretary.  But when the house (at least around here) does most of their work for them, I think its a rip off to be charging the bowlers $1.00 for what the secretary is NOT doing.  The houses print out the standing sheets, some do the banking, awards and provide the supplies.  So in those cases I'm wondering what the secretary is doing.  Since we merged, its been like pulling teeth to get the secretaries to do their jobs on the correct provided forms in a timely manner.

Boy I need to raise my rates after seeing those prices.  I am a secretary and for my services I get $175 for a 36 week session.  The same goes for the treasurer.  I just think of it as a new bowling ball every year.  Of course the alley takes care of compiling the averages which makes it easy.

There are a lot more things to do as secretary besides filling out award forms, and collecting envelopes.

The secretary is always looking for ways to make the league better; weather it be banquets, or finding bowlers, filling teams.

As far as BLS or any other computer program that can help him/her do their job quicker or easier, these programs are not free, but not only that you still ( if you a good secretary) check to make sure that the program is running properly ( having a back-up to these programs take time as well).

If you think that being a secretary is easy money, step up to the plate and take over

I am not saying that being a secretary is easy money as long as the secretary does what they are supposed to be doing. If they are not, then I say they need to be released and find someone who will do the job correctly.

Trust me, my wife is a secretary for 2 leagues. I had to do her job for a week last year, family emergency, what she gets paid, she earns !

Taxes ? Better check out the new IRS book, you have to claim the monies paid, just as in any other job, to be legal. Now, will some not declare it ? NOT MY problem, but this year, they must pay taxes on monies earned.

yeah, but that would be benificial really, you get to write off all your bowling expenses, bowling balls, internet, computer, printer, paper, gas to the center and back

and the only time you have to file it is if your making over $600, anything less and you dont pay taxes, but if you make $200 you should still report it, and write off everything

anyone doing it though should file it no matter what they make, with all the tax write-offs your going to end up making more money than what you paid from the league

The problem I see within the 200 leagues in our association is that the Secretary is more of a popularity contest, rather then the league picking a good business person.  So many of the Secretaries have been such for so long that they refuse to change, learn, or adapt to anything new that USBC thows at us in the administrative sense.  Getting the Secretaries to do their jobs is like pulling teeth.  Only about a 1/4 of them do a thorough job, to the point where we in the office don't have to hold their hands through every little process.  We even set up Secretary Workshops (this explains the duties and changes in USBC rules etc...) in each of our 11 houses (one house declined to have a workshop) and guess what??  Only the good secretaries go, leaving the inept ones still doing a crappy job.  When a house has 27 leagues in the winter and only 5 secretaries show up to the meeting, that's pretty disheartening.
