Is this the league for you?
« on: November 22, 2010, 06:02:32 AM »
I'm trying to form a semi competitive league with broad appeal.  Does this sound like a sell?

-Monday evenings
-typical house shot
-$20 a week: 10lineage/10prize
-teams of any combination of men/women/both
-optional $5 brackets
-optional $1  (11 strike) strike pot (it gets up there)
-1/2off all beer and wine all day
-teams of 4
-standard 3 game format
-handicap is 50% of 230, no cap on team average

A house strike pot, you buy in for a dollar and have to strike in the 11 frames that are spaced out across 3 games.  Ours is currently 3,000

The idea you have is not all that uncommon, its basically a mens league that allows women, something the USBC already allows.I admit I do like the 1/2 off beer and wine part, though I doubt ANY proprietor would go along with it.The handicap system sort of favors higher avg bowlers. The biggest problem I see for you is where do you get the bodies from to fill it?

Everything seems pretty good but the handicap...anyone averaging below 220 would be stupid to bowl a 50% handicap spread.  Someone averaging 200 is giving 15 pins up to a 230 bowler.  Over the course of 36 weeks they have no chance...and you might get some to fall for it the first year...but they wouldn't come back.

The only chance lower average bowlers have with that handicap base is if all the high average people get drunk with the cheap beer and wine. You must have a high average.

Sounds like a bunch of high average drunks trying to make money and get high off of someone else's money. Yeah, real attractive!

Put out a true heavy oil, reverse block, not just a flat sport pattern that plays like a reverse, and I'll bowl with all the 230 average drunks you can muster.

Why don't you state what it really is. Let's take money from anyone averaging under 200 league. At %50 of 230, it might as well be a scratch league. Let me guess you have your team lined up and you probably all average over 215 on a THS.

There is no BROAD appeal about your league. Seriously make it a scratch league. 50% handicap is a joke.

is it just me or is $20 a little steep for a standard league also? I'm in 2 leauges currently, one a fun mixed THS and the other a pbax, and I currently pay $12 and $16 a night.

$20 sounds cheap to me. Both of mine are men's handicap with few high averages and both are $25 per night. (No brackets or pots in one league. brackets, both scratch and handicap, in the 2nd)

I think $15 per night qualifies as a true fun league (no disparagement intended). I wish some of ours were in that range with little money involved. Most of ours (in NJ) seem intended to make people money. If most were lower in fees, I'd bet a lot fewer people would bowl. Pity.

$25-$35 a night just for league bowling fees??? Unreal. Here in Kentucky I pay $13 a night in two leagues, and $16 in the other. Prize funds aren't terribly big, but that way more people can afford to bowl, and if you want to spend extra cash getting in jackpots, you're more likely to win good money doing that anyway.

This is how you appeal to a broad range. Keep the weekly fee down, but offer extras for those who want to bowl for the money.

100% of 260, or have it 100% of the highest average on the league.

It is on a house shot, why not.

I bowl regular in 2 leagues and sub in another at prices of $12, $14, and $18 (doubles).  $20 seems high and I agree at 50% of 230 you just as well make it scratch.
