Kegel Review
« on: November 22, 2010, 06:39:09 AM »
I attended Kegel 11/19/2010 in an all day session. I went prepared with a list of 6 items I wanted to accomplish, 3 each in my physical game and ball/grip/layouts.

The days started off with a very nice interview to determine what I wanted to accomplish, my background and some other pertenint information sharing. It lasted about 30 minutes and is part of an initial session. Future sessions will not require this.

Off to the lanes and warming up. After about 10 minutes CATS was started for 10 shots. What followed was a review of the CATS data which was invaluable. Then a comparison of what the "pros" do versus what I do. It was truely great to see my good points and my bad points in comparison to real bowlers. This clearly identified what specific skills I needed to work on.

After about an 90 mintues of seeing what I was doing and seeing what I was supposed to do I was able to make real changes. Then more CATS analsys proving the benifits. By lunch we had addressed my three physical concerns, Generating more ball speed, controlling my launch angle and releasing the ball more parallel to the lane.

After lunch, we addressed my concerns about my Grip, my arsenal and my knowledge about Mo Pinel's Dual Angle Layout. I drilled a new ball with the different grip which solved my release issue and used the ball the remaining of the day.

The afternoon I worked with a different coach which was intentional. I wanted two different people looking at me and I got two different types of coaching... one more fundamentals and the other more high level.

In all, I spent $500 for training (entire day), I spent $150 for a new ball and movable them slug to change all my other balls to the same grip a couple kegel shirts. I spent a day. I learned about my game on a level I never thought of. And I physically saw the difference between the begining and end.

Was it worth it? YES YES YES. Will I do it again? YES YES YES. Do I recommed it? YES YES YES... especially if you are serious about wanting to improve. This is not just for the PROS but remember they go there too.

Thanks Kegel.

That's good stuff. Too bad Kegel is a rather long drive or a plane ride for me to go to.

I went to Turbo Tech in March 2008 with a good buddy and his son. They do a nice group rate that was based on bringing 3 players. We got video-taped, had  Ebonite Digi-Trax analysis, and also got to choose a couple of patterns for our after lunch session. We went up on a Thursday night (the weather was supposed to be kind of crappy Friday morning) stayed and got there around 8:30 AM. After taking care of business matters, we each had a interview, had our fits checked, and our arsenal looked at. Then we hit the lanes and each was given 2-3 things to work on the entire time. In the afternoon, we got arsenal evaluations and also had Lou give us recommendations based on each of our particular track and styles. We also found out that the Dual Angle method was based off of Lou's principles for the Turbo Sect. Lou was very humble and said that Mo can explain it better than him anyway....lol.

It sounds like what you went thru at Kegel is a lot of what we went thru as well. I would think that since Lou Marquez was previously with Kegel at the training center, he had some initial input on the curriculum. Here is the nice thing about Lou. When we came back from lunch and worked on our games, Lou stayed over with us for close to 3 1/2 hours past our end time of 4PM. This was on a Friday and on a day that it had started to snow on our way back from lunch and when it was time to leave, traffic was at a crawl taking us close to two hours to get out of metro Detroit and back on 75 towards Ohio.

Trust me, most people on a Friday afternoon would have cut it short especially with the weather taking a turn for the worse like it did. Lou was professional throughout and never once gave the appearance of "rushing" us or short-changing us.

BigMike,

I am sure there is alot of similarities. I agree about the distance to Kegel, being from Memphis it was a haul (850 miles one way). I would have flown but adding in the wife and a rental car, I could not justify spending 1000 for travel when driving was only $200 in gas. SO I spent a day in both directions.

Kegel also has group discounts, for two, three, four or more. But I want private dedicated coaching. Next time, I am sure that I will plan further ahead as several others here would have gone if I told them further in advance.

If there was anything that Kegel could have done better I am not sure what it could be. They were polite, professional and delivered on what I needed. Anyone who is considering training and is serious about there game should save up and go here. A new ball and layout may help but skill lasts a lifetime.
