Is used equipment Safe?
« on: May 18, 2004, 03:47:40 AM »
If I purchase a previously used ball, is it safe to redrill it?  One of the pro shops I just visited told me to be cautious of redrilling used equip. because the bridge may crack, and other problems that may occur.  I'm just curious on others opinoins and previous experiences.

Thanks, Toddler

If redrilling any ball was unsafe, there would be no such thing as plugs.

But he is right, you should be careful. Try not to go for anything with more than one set of plugs in it, just to be safe.

Good luck.

There is nothing wrong with buying used equipment as long as you know what your getting and the seller is trustworthy. Buying used is the best in my opinion. I dont think i'll ever buy a new ball again. Just my 2 cents...

Most of what I'm using right now is used. Just ask lots of questions
about the used ball. I try to buy a ball that has a layout that I like
so the most I ever have to do is have the thumb plugged. The proshop I use is
very good and even though I've had a couple of plugs start to crack they have fixed it for free.

PS,  great way to try out new layouts.

Your driller was smart to tell you that, especially if your a newbie, but 9 times out of 10 its fine to plug a ball. Used equipment is great also in the fact that its cheap, and gives you some "experimenting" room, so your now shelling out 200 bucks everytime you wanna try something different.

I think BK25 meant that you would noT be shelling out 200 bucks each time.

I have bought many used balls in the last year and I have not had a problem with any of the plug jobs that were already on the ball or the ones that my driller put in.  Some of the ones I own have three or four plug jobs now.

I personally like to buy used ones first to see what the reaction of that ball is like for me.  Reading about how it works for others is useless for me, other than a comparison between balls with the same reviewer, so this is a much cheaper way to go than buying one new and finding out it does not fit my style.

MI, lol thnx, that is what i meant. And 100 bucks for a 'new' ball is cheap, and thats not true at all. Depends on 1)where you live 2)what kind of ball your actually getting.

When done by a decent pro shop, you should be able to get at LEAST 3 drillings out of any ball. Then the problem usually becomes getting the right side & top weight if you want a specific drilling. Cracking is normally the last thing I worry about.

My pink raspberry had 5 drills & my red pearl hammer currently has 6.

i have purchased over 50 used balls in the last year, and have not had one single problem with any of them.  single drilled, plugged once, thumb moved, fingers shifted.  had em all, and all have served their purpose with no problems.  i would buy used 100 times before i buy new.

I buy quite a few used balls, with no problems to report.  It is a cheap way to try a ball you have been interested or update some worn out ones.

Since the reactives came out around 1989 or so, I have probably had over 250 different balls, only about 6 or 7 brand new ones.  I was so impressed with the Power Groove Reactives, I bought one.  No problems with plugged balls, I just try to get those with no plugs in the track.  I know its only less than 1 1/2", but you never know how someone elses plug will turn out as far as the contour of the ball.
One of my friends and customer is very anal about plugged balls, even a 1/4" showing.  He waits until the distributors are closing them out or he finds a good deal on e-bay for new stuff.  I don't mind, I still make money drilling them and I have no stake in the warranty issues if he ever has any.

NO.  I only have NEW balls.  Have a friend whose USED ball cracked apart all around the fingerholes because of PLUG area.  Plugs can be more BRITTLE than the normal cover.  There is the REASON WHY used balls are cheaper.
