Issues Making Adjustments
« on: October 28, 2016, 11:14:25 AM »
For some reason, this season on league I'm having trouble making the right adjustments when the shot starts to change; usually towards the end of the second game and definitely by the third.  It seems that no matter what I throw or the adjustments I make (moving left), everything keeps coming in high.  I don't know if the house has changed the volume of oil/conditioner (these are synthetic lanes) from what they used in the past, but it used to be the most I'd have to move from the beginning of the night to the end was 2-3 boards left, still throwing at my same mark and I could stay in the pocket.  Not this year!!

So here's what I'm thinking I might try;
1) Put my old Roto Grip Mars back in the bag, since it's probably the weakest ball I've got and try throwing it.  I figure I could stay pretty much in the same area as where I start (standing on 15 and throwing at 10) and the ball shouldn't come back as strong or as much.

2)Try throwing a stronger ball (probably my Roto Grip Menace), but move right at the same time moving my mark a little right and see if it can make it back into the pocket.

The balls I'm mostly using now are a Defiant Soul or an Optimus Solid.  I love both balls but by the third game I can't seem to stay off the head pin with either.  Even moving both my feet and my mark left and staying in the oil down the middle,  they both come back too strong.

Any advice/input would be appreciated!!
Thanks!!

Try keeping the same down lane target as you move left, creating more angle through the front of the lane.  If there isn't enough build up in the middle of the lane there is nothing to try to stay in, so you have to create the hold with angle.

I agree with the post above.

If you do get left though and the ball is still checking up early OR you're unable to carry (start leaving flat 10's etc) or get an inconsistent reaction it may be time to switch to a ball that will naturally get down the lane cleaner as an adjustment.  The answer isn't always a ball change but in the situation you described in the OP (can't keep the ball from diving high) a ball change can be optimal.

If I'm unable to keep my Eternal Cell or Snap Lock from diving on me I ball down to a Hectic.  The nature of that ball is different than the Eternal & Snap Lock.

It's when the friction develops that much that you have to start looking to ball down.

I agree, your breakpoint target shouldn't change. How you get there in the fronts should. Also you should begin adjusting from your first shot. Be cognisant of who you're bowling with and who you're bowling against. Some teams will know how to play the lanes and get them to break down correctly. Some will not. If you are bowling with or against people throwing dull reactive at the same breakpoint, its going to be a huge jump left as the oil will evaporate. If they are throwing urethane. the fronts are going to burn and the oil will carry to the back, meaning a deeper jump but tighter line.
