What type of bowler would you have the most praise for??
« on: February 22, 2007, 04:36:07 AM »
Ok, here is the scenario:

Its a big tournament, lots of good players, big venue, a lot of pressure to get to the final, & its a fairly tough pattern thats been put down from the start. Two bowlers make it through to the final. They are both very different from each other in their style of play;

1st bowler - Mainly used 1 ball throughout the whole tournament & adjusts using his feet & hand/wrist.

2nd bowler - Has used many balls throughout the tournament but knows exactly what line to play on the lanes with the different ball.

I wouldnt have anyone in particular because i do a bit of both. But do you think the one who can adjust by moving is the 'better' bowler, or the one whose knowledge of what his ball will do on the current condition?

One of those:
'You dont need that many balls' Vs 'You wont get very far with just that ball'

I would say that the guy who can adjust with his feet/hand/wrist would be the better bowler because he has better control over himself and could always change balls if he wanted too.  If I'm reading this right, the second bowler has perfected his shot but changes his ball based on lane conditions.  I think that bowler #1 would be more successful.  A friend of mine is in his late 40's and has had the same ball/shoes for 25 years.  It utterly amazes me how he can make his shot no matter what lane condition thru adjustments and averages 200+ with ease.  Whereas his son throws a great ball, but cannot/will not adjust and even with his four different bowling balls, he can't always find a line that works.  Sorry for the long response, but I figured I'd give my real life example.

Personally, I think everyone needs a bit of both.  I remember reading somewhere on here a quote "You cannot out-execute bad ball reaction."  I think that is very relevant to this argument.  If bowler #1 struggles to kick out corner pins when the lanes dry up and the the ball is losing energy, for example, the resulting adjustment may cause some undesired ball reaction.  Not to mention the loss of area  lane.  While if bowler #2 starts to plaque the corners, he/she can change balls and lines if needed to carry the strikes at a higher percentage, while maintaining what area on the lane he/she had to miss.

Overall, moving hand positions, lines and changing balls due to the lane oils breaking down faster than ever, is crucial to everyone's game.

My simple answer... what if the day came that you didn't have 3-4-5-6 balls to choose from? Would you still be able to win? If yes, then you are the better bowler. Each requires knowledge of the game... one depends more on skills and knowledge; the other equipment and knowledge.

I would give more praise to the bowler that can use 1 ball and make it work because of adjustments with his game.

I for one feel that bowlers now a days rely on equipment too much.  I have falling into that trap myself.  I'm slowly getting out of it though.

If you really want to have fun, bring one ball and a spare to a tourney and see how you do.  If anything you will really learn what that ball can do.
