Offset Thumb??
« on: January 10, 2005, 09:29:15 AM »
Has any pro shop drilled an offset thumb for a customer??
--------------------
I never dreamed it would be me, My name for all eternity, Recorded here at this hallowed place Alas, my name, no more my face. "In the line of duty," I hear them say: My family now the price to pay. My folded flag stained with their tears; We only had those few short years. The badge no longer on my chest, I sleep now in eternal rest. My sword I pass to those behind, And pray they keep this thought in mind. I never dreamed it would be me, And with heavy heart and bended knee, I ask for all here from the past: Dear God, let my name be the last.

I know that I'll get a lot of disagreement, but, after years of having "offset thumbs" drilled, I was finally convinced by my driller that there is no such thing.  When you move the thumb (righty) to the right all that you've done is 1) change the finger pitches and 2) shorten the middle finger span and lengthen the ring finger span.

Now, if you want your thumb drilled under the middle finger, fine, but remember that you have changed pitch and span when you do so.

K, my theory used to be this:  look at your hand.  Where is your thumb?  Is it between the middle and ring finger?  Probably not - it's much closer to  behind the index finger, hence "offset" is closer to natural.

If you stretch your fingers out, it is much closer to the middle finger/ ring finger, I thought the same thing, asked my driller, he pointed this out to me.

For some people, like 15 year olds, but not all.

Flexibility, health issues (tendonitis, etc) and final pitches determine what the bowler's final spans and pitches will be most appropriate. How people mess up their hands in their life outside of bowling (like manual labor, like typing on a keyboard for a living) can make a HUGE difference.
