I think a lot depends on the up front knowledge of what you will be bowling on. A few years ago i bowled a league where we had 5 patterns. 4 where sport shot and the 5th the house shot. As it was a 35 week league all 5 patterns would be played 7 times throughout the season. The counter had a bag with 35 chips in it. before league they would pull one and that was the pattern. we never knew in advance what we had and you had to figure it out. If you paid attention to what was out each week you could predict the likelihood of what pattern would be there by the number of times each pattern had been used. It was an interesting year to say the least . but fun and challenging.
