Pro's secret?
« on: November 24, 2013, 12:09:47 PM »
I saw an on line video that shows most of the "Pros" balance arm position and it shows that their thumb is pointing downward during their approach. The moderator said this was common among most good bowlers. Why would this be necessary? Most of their balance arms were fully extended, but what would the position of their thumb have to do with anything? I'll have to try this on league night.

Most of the guys you see do this go from very open shoulders to square or closed at release.  The left arm pulling back helps close the shoulders.  If your thumb is pointed up it really limits your range of motion.

Try tilting forward and reaching for something.  Your thumb naturally wants to go down.

He is referring to the hand of the balance (non-throwing) arm. I believe it is to help keep you arm from rotating to far towards your back which would cause your shoulders to over rotate as well. To see this work first stand up and stick your balance arm out with your thumb pointed up. Now, move your arm back as far as you can. Next, do the same thing with your thumb pointed down. You will find that as your hand gets to be even with your shoulders, you will feel resistance. This resistance keeps you shoulders from over rotating during the release.

Getting the Balance Arm Forward with the Thumb Down is part of what Joe Slowinski calls "Biomechanical Efficiency".  One of the best resources available on the web is the DYDS (Drop your d*mn shoulder) facebook page.

If you want to adopt Modern Bowling principles, it is a good place to start!

Those of you that would like to improve your hand position at release, get yourself over there and start learning!

Pointing the thumb down seems to effortlessly pull your torso down closer to the floor.  This allows you to smoothly bend forward at the waist and get a high backswing.  Notice Dom Barrett does not push the ball out to initiate his swing.  He seems to almost pull it up into his backswing.  THe thumb down thing facilitates the shoulder opening and backswing.
