Blister Problems
« on: May 31, 2009, 08:53:59 AM »
I went bowling this morning and toward the end of the third game i felt a slight pinch right below my thumb on the palm side of my hand.  I looked down and it seemed that i had a blood blister.

Now this happend to me me a couple years ago and came back sever times but never as bad as the first time or today.  My question is there any thing i can wear to protect this area of my hand from getting this.  I thought about starting to wear a glove of some kind that i can add padding underneath.

If any one has any advice please send it my way.  Thanks in advance.

Blisters are nearly always from that area rubbing against the ball. As was mentioned before, make sure the fit is correct, and after that be certain you're not gripping it so that it causes the irritation. A little extra bevel may be the easy cure, though.

As for the wearing something to protect it, you could wear some type of fitting tape in the area, although it might make it really hard to hang onto the ball.

Beveling the thumb may be the quick fix, but that not be the only problem.  Span too long, thumb hole too big, too much reverse pitch, combos of these could all be why smasher is squeezing the ball.  Beveling may make the overall problem worse, just without any blisters.

I agree with Mike. It's very difficult to diagnose without seeing your hand in the ball and how it's coming out of fit.

Also, all blisters are not caused the same way. Blood blisters usually occur due to some sort of "pinching" happening, whereas the "typical" blister is usually caused by rubbing against the ball somewhere.

Something's not right though. Pay attention to your grip pressure required to grip the ball. Excessive reverse pitches tend to make us grip tighter than we should, then if something else is slightly off it worsens the problem.

I used to have this problem and I would put some medical tape there and that would do the job. But, I haven't had any blisters there in a long time.

I've recently started beveling the front of my tumbhole quite a bit.  I then add a few pieces of 3/4 inch thumbhole tape to the front of the hole.  It has reduced friction on the pad of my thumb significantly, and I don't tug the ball nearly as often.

Hint:  Cut a piece of thumb tape in half and put both halves down towards the bottom of your thumbhole.  Then put the full pieces of thumb tape on top of those...it'll make the bottom of the hole a touch snugger than the top.  It keeps me from gripping the ball because it feels like I won't drop the ball.

thank you so far guys.  I am going to try some of the stuff you suggested.  I really appreaciate it.  What makes me feel so bad is that i was just gonna start practicing  and working on some new things for next season.

I have thought about using a glove but never got around to doing it.

Keep the advice coming if there is any more and THANK YOU again every one so far.
