Coaching Questions
« on: January 16, 2011, 07:19:33 AM »
I have a couple questions. I am a youth coach, and was wondering if anyone knows of a website I can print a picture of the approach and the lanes with arrows for coaching purposes. Another question, I have a couple new kids this session ( ages 10-12 ) right handed bowlers sliding on their right foot. The other coach and myself have worked with these kids but just can't seem to get a couple of them to stop sliding on the wrong foot. I would like to get them out of that habit now while they are still young and new to the sport. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Good luck and good bowling to all...

Do a search for "bowling clip board" in your faverite search engine. It is indispensable as a coaching tool. For the wrong foot thing not sure what you have tried to get them to do to correct this. I asume you tried to get them to start on a different foot. Try this tell them to do thier approach without the ball. Then when they are on the correct slide foot say stop. repeat this several times till you think they have it down pat. Then see if it's changed with a ball in hand.

Bowling is like life. Sometimes you are the ball. Other times you are the pins.

The way I have always worked with students on the wrong foot thing is to move them up to the foul line and just have them deliver the ball taking just the last step with their left hand. You have them do that for a couple of sessions and then from there you can start adding the standard approach.

Always be sincere, even when you don't mean it

Have them think each step as they take it - "right, left, right, slide".  May help.  --  JohnP

I have a couple kids that do this as well I've been working with them on doing a fake step, shift the weight from right to left with out moving the ball for the first move....it has helped them out...it seems to help with their step/step/step/slide...Like an implied 5 step approach.....

I have seen a Dry Erase Clip Board that has the Approach on it as well as down lane...It was  like 11"x 17" size...I'm looking for it myself too....

Thanks for all the tips and info guys. Sorry it took so long to respond, found out this week wife has cancer and have been dealing with that. Will let you all know how it turns out with the kids when I get a chance to work with them again. Thanks again....

Good luck and good bowling to all...
