Need some help.
« on: November 11, 2009, 01:36:51 AM »
Hey everyone, i'm doing my senior project in school on basically anything that makes a bowling ball. I'm stuck on the coverstock part. What exactly do the plasticizers do in the cover? I know without them, the ball will hardly react, but i'm not sure EXACTLY what they do. Google doesn't help and I know there is the wise few here that can. This is the site where I learned everything I know that i'm putting into this project. When i'm finished with it, I may share it if I think it's good enough.

Thanks in advnace! I will most likely have more questions so stay tuned lol.

Hey FastTracker...very neat idea for a project!  I hope that it turns out well.

Frankly, I know squat about the chemistry of coverstocks.  But have you tried contacting the manufacturers?  I'm sure there's at least one company willing to work with you.  I hope so anyway.

That is also a good idea, noodle. I bet someone at 900 Global would be willing to help. They seem to have a great customer service reputation. Thanks for the idea!

I had heard that the plasticisers make the "pores" in the coverstock so without them the ball (having no pores to soak up the oil and create friction) would just skate.

The information in the article linked below and other articles at the same website may be of help.  I'm sure if you need more info someone at Ebonite or Hammer would be glad to assist.  --  JohnP
