JOG Question
« on: July 07, 2007, 08:00:29 PM »
I know, I know, there is a youth board on here, but I felt this belonged more in the MISC. section.

So, I'm reading the participating junior's blog's and I come across Jessica Baker's from today.  It goes on saying how she slept past her alarm, etc, etc, then gets to a pretty puzzling section.

"I checked in, then at 1:30 pm I practiced @ Airport Lanes which had the Chameleon pattern. I decided to practice with my friend Jake, it is always nice to be able to discuss things with someone who also has a good idea of how the lanes are playing- house played a little weird considering there are about 5 different bays with lanes. I mainly used my Vapor Zone and my Fury. I was able to get comfortable on a few different parts of the lane, and overall I felt it went well.

From there I went to the 4 pm session @ Transit Lanes which had the shark pattern- it definetaly played different than any shark pattern I have seen... again things were a little tough with the surface being older wood & me not physically throwing it the best- but I tried to make the best of it and ended up being satisfied playing further in with my Vapor Zone."

Say it isn't so.  Are they really putting out PBA patterns for JOG this year?  Over the years, I've come to have known JOG putting out tough, undisclosed shots year after year.  To hear they're putting out PBA shots is kind of a joke.  It's going to be nothing new to most players out there, as PBA experience leagues are basically everywhere.  What does everyone else think of this?

Yep, we are bowling on a modified PBA patterns. Transit is our long modified Shark, Airport is our medium modified Chameleon, and Thruway is our short modified Cheetah.

Although, I must say after practice, the Chameleon seemed easier than what I've bowled on before.

Uhh...yeah? I'm here in Buffalo right now. The sheets they have at the counters of the bowling alley and on the windows and walls all say something like "Junior Gold Cheetah/Shark/Chameleon, adjusted for surface".

I have one of them in my car. If I actually knew how to read them, I'd have all three .

It looks as if PBA Patterns are being put down to ensure that the guys that make it higher up further in the rounds are the ones that actually throw it well so the committee has a wider selection of talent to choose from in the top 16.  The past few years there have been a few "suspect" styles that have made the top 16 that doesn't "fit the mold" of what the committee wants to see on their Jr. USA Team, while a few players that have thrown it really well(who they would have loved to pick) and got lost in transition in the later cuts got left out.

The PBA Patterns are never a complete shut out, so the physically talented players can zone in and shoot 220-240s rather than grinding 170-190 in years past.  Now it looks like the guys with the best physical and mental games rise to the top rather than the few straight ballers that have made all their spares and wood, but don't necessarily throw it the best in the world, sneak into the top 32 or 16.

2 years ago this tourney was great, i bowled my one and only time in indy, im here this weekend with my gf who is bowling and i honestly think its a joke to put out the pba patterns...its dumb, everyone knows where to play, there is no struggle to find the right line, wutever i no you still have make shots and wut not and yes the guys who can bowl are gonna do good, OG, blanchard, wut have you...they are good on everyshot, but to me it was more fun when u new the pattern was short med and long, and thats ALL YOU KNEW...but wutever...

good luck to everyone this weekend i hope there are some big scores, i heard ogrady was killing em earlier during practice, which isnt unusal for him...

I'm dialed in on the Chameleon, if it's just like in practice. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to practice on a fresh Cheetah or Shark. I got the second shift on Cheetah, and third shift on Shark.

Exactly.  This has the potential to turn into more of a joke than last year's high scores. (in 2005, 204.4 LED after 30 games... in 2006, 203 was 16th place.)

So, I'm talking to a friend in JOG.  He says the Chameleon and Shark are on the wood houses and the Cheetah is on the synthetic house... Isn't that kind of bassackwards?

You never know, I've seen synthetic lanes that looked and played worse than good wood...

Oh, I know, the only times I've thrown on the cheetah has been on synthetics, I was just under the impression the Cheetah was designed specifically for Wood lanes.

Just wait until you bowl for score...sure, in practice, the lanes seem easy. But dont they always...your body is loose and you are only worried about ball reaction and finding the best place to play the lanes.(Not score so much) Naturally when the lights come on scores will go down, and yes, the ones with more experience will tend to do better. (and better spare shooters)

I'm not knocking anyones game but just wait until after the first round before you start calling the shots soft or dumb. If someone shoots 1400+ then I'll shut my mouth.

Let me remind you that before PBA shots, Sport shots were a 2:1 ratio or less.
Now that PBA (usually 3:1 ratio) are acceptable Sport alternative shots scores may seem to be on the rise. Or it may be just because of the talent...I choose the latter.

which I think is a great idea because some great players have been left behind in the past to straight ballers that just make spares and can't put up big numbers)
