JOG Question
« on: July 07, 2007, 08:00:29 PM »
I know, I know, there is a youth board on here, but I felt this belonged more in the MISC. section.

So, I'm reading the participating junior's blog's and I come across Jessica Baker's from today.  It goes on saying how she slept past her alarm, etc, etc, then gets to a pretty puzzling section.

"I checked in, then at 1:30 pm I practiced @ Airport Lanes which had the Chameleon pattern. I decided to practice with my friend Jake, it is always nice to be able to discuss things with someone who also has a good idea of how the lanes are playing- house played a little weird considering there are about 5 different bays with lanes. I mainly used my Vapor Zone and my Fury. I was able to get comfortable on a few different parts of the lane, and overall I felt it went well.

From there I went to the 4 pm session @ Transit Lanes which had the shark pattern- it definetaly played different than any shark pattern I have seen... again things were a little tough with the surface being older wood & me not physically throwing it the best- but I tried to make the best of it and ended up being satisfied playing further in with my Vapor Zone."

Say it isn't so.  Are they really putting out PBA patterns for JOG this year?  Over the years, I've come to have known JOG putting out tough, undisclosed shots year after year.  To hear they're putting out PBA shots is kind of a joke.  It's going to be nothing new to most players out there, as PBA experience leagues are basically everywhere.  What does everyone else think of this?

It's just a pretty insulting statement to post.

I'm not mad at you or anything...

but then again I'm just saying that it's pretty insulting to some of the bowlers that did make team usa.

I also am in Buffalo competing in the Junior Gold Championships. Unfortunately, because of the huge lines for practice sessions, I only got to practice at Thruway which was the modified Cheetah. It was similar to the original Cheetah, but I believe there were a few more units on the outside as I couldn't bounce it out to the gutter like you are supposed to be able to.

I like the idea of using 'softer' patterns for a tournament like this for a couple of reasons. One being that the lanes are still fair to everyone because it isn't adult bumper bowling and two being that the people who choose Team USA want people who can destroy patterns that are playable but still provide a challenge (which I think is a great idea because some great players have been left behind in the past to straight ballers that just make spares and can't put up big numbers).

I would have to agree about practice. It's ridiculous! Fortunately, I was able to at least bowl second shift at 10 this morning on Cheetah. I had to settle for open play at 12:30 for Shark. I went to Transit right after I was done at Thruway. Got there about 11:30 and signed up for the 6 PM shift. Too bad I was already 100 on the list.

They need to make it 3 days of practice with everyone guaranteed one session at each house, and then lists for those who want more than that.

And I definitely hear what you're saying about Cheetah. It's harder than what I bowled on before (I know it's modified), but still playable. Can't miss left for me, otherwise I skate too long and then hit the headpin weak and leave some nasty splits.

If I remember correctly, they don't even put the same type of oil out for practice as they do when they actually start the tournament.

That's what I hear about a lot of tournaments. Like last year at Teen Masters, one of the experienced guys was telling me not to even pay much attention to practice, as it would play almost completely different to the tournament pattern. Whatever, I'm left-handed. I carry the world anyway, right ?

USBC did not think this year through.  They had more spots but are cutting to less, they are having the same time for practices and the organization is tournament.  JOG has lost its prestige due to the influx of participants and easier shots.  Air Port is night and day at both ends.  The low end backs up out side and the high end is really thick.  Thruway carrydowns like crazy and then transit is just really flat.

Proof is in the numbers... 16th right now is averaging 213...

Looking at the standings.  Where's O'Grady?  Where's the people that are posting the blogs?  Seems like a lot missing.

The patterns are all modified from the true experience patterns.  Shark and Chameleon have been bumped up to over 27 ml and Cheetah has been shortened, volume lightened, as well as more units added to the outside of the lane.  Whoever says the pba patterns are soft has an issue.  Go bowl on tour if you think so.  Kegel knows what they are doing, and scores will be no higher than last year.  Don't criticize and make judgemends unless your bowling on them or here watching closely.

Just out of curiousity, I checked the 2006 boys and you know what the average was for the first six games for 16th place?

212.5

http://www.bowl.com/tournaments/youth/jrgold/eventResults.aspx?i=11956&f=2

six games qualifying for 2007

225.7

http://www.bowl.com/tournaments/youth/jrgold/eventResults.aspx?i=11956&f=2

Six games qualifying for 2006

231.5

I didn't check the girls but I suspect the pattern will be the same.

So what does it mean "proof is in the numbers"?  Are the numbers suppose to back up or disprove your top post?

Well these shots are not the easy but still scoreable. I am averaging 203 in my pba expernce league. Had a rough couple weeks on the chetea pattern. I was kind of disappointed they did not keep with there harder shots of years past. But I can not say I am not suprised last year scores were way up from my last year at nationals. They are just trying to keep kids in the game I guess.
